Question

IBM DS4700 Firmware Upgrade - Not Valid?

Asked by: jaredfaulkner

We have a dual-controller DS4700 contained in a single enclosure. We successfully upgraded firmware from 06.16.92.00 to 06.60.22.00 with no difficulty. However, when we attempt to load 07.36.17.00 (required preparatory to loading the current 07.50.13.00), the firmware file is not listed in the available files in Storage Manager. If I manually select the file by setting the filter to All Files, I receive the error "FW_DS4700_07361700.dlp is not a valid Firmware downloadable file."

We are using IBM System Storage DS Storage Manager version 10.50.G5.22. The EDDM firmware is current for the installed drives. The system is up and in optimal condition.

My last place had a DS4300.  A little smaller than the DS4700, but same gear.

I recall controller firmware upgrades to be particularly problematic, in that they had to be incrementally done, and also, most required an upgrade of storage manager before they would actually upload/function properly.

What version of Storage Manager are you running?  I would try to download the current/correct version of that, and also double-check your drive firmware.  There was a firmware release that required all the drives to be upgraded before you could do the controllers.

Last suggestion is to download a new copy of the firmware from IBM's website.  Perhaps that one is corrupted. ??

IBM says: when moving from 6.x to 7.x firmware, it is necessary to use the upgrade utility that is part of the Enterprise Management portion of Storage Manager, rather than the standard utility found under subsystem management.
