Question

NetApp - SnapShot Drive Full, Lun Offline

Asked by: St3veMax

Folks,

I'm working with a IBM N3300 (NetApp FAS2020) and I have a volume created and a lun inside said volume. Regularly when the space allocated inside the volume for Snapshots fills up, it takes the LUN of that volume offline.

I'm not overly familure with NetApp's - How can I stop this behaviour ?

TIA.

Steve

That's the nature of the beast. The workaround is to allocate 2.5x the space when you create the LUN. Alternatively, you can 'thin provision' the snapshot reserve, but you must take care with this option as you can end up in the same place you are now.

Have a look at these documents:
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=ssg1S7002468&aid=1 from about page 182. It starts getting meaty at page 187.

You should be able to increase the snap reserve using this command:  snap reserve <volume_name> <percent> - so set snap reserve to 150% on the volume you want to snap.

Increasing the snapshot reserve will increase the amount of wasted storage and is NOT good advice. Allocating 2.5x the space also hasn't been best practice for quite a  long time.

The recommended way to deal with this is

1. set the fractional reserve to zero (this will free up a lot of reserved space)

vol options <volname> fractional_reserve 0

2. Set snapshot autodelete on (this will delete snapshots if space is needed)

snap autodelete <volname> trigger snap_reserve
snap autodelete <volname> defer_delete none
snap autodelete <volname> target_free_space 10
snap autodelete <volname> on
vol options <volname> try_first snap_delete

Now resize the volume to make sure you've got at least 25% free space.

Then set the volume to grow if deleting snapshots is not enough:

vol autosize <volname> on

Thanks for the input folks. I've got the fractional reserve set to zero, but will look at the other commands.

Just to clarify the free space bit, this is 25% free in the volume? I assume in a 100GB Volume, 75GB LUN and the remainder free?

Thanks.

>I've got the fractional reserve set to zero

careful, don't set the fractional reserve to zero unless you enable snapshot autodelete and/or volume autogrow !

> this is 25% free in the volume

Yes, in the volume.

Any writes to the LUN between snapshots will fill up this free space when the snapshot reserve is used up, so it's a good thing to monitor this from time to time and enlarge it as needed.

If you've got any kind of monitoring tool you could also configure it to monitor free space.
