the BIOS and drivers in one of our RHEL5 box. The system
is able to see the HBA, from the SANSurfer GUI.
When I started the GUI, I was able to connect
to the host. I clicked on the "Configure" button, but
it's giving this error "must have fiber devices to configure".
On the left panel of the GUI, it displays the Hostname and HBA
model 2460, but it gives a warning that says "Port 1: Loop Down".
I also clicked on the event log, and I'm finding the following
info: "Status change: Good status: Loop down".
We have ruled-out the bad FC cable, by shining a light on one
end, and we were able to see a beam of light on the opposite end
of the cable.
What else are we missing here?

Look at the LEDs on the HBA. If all the LEDs are lit, the drivers haven't loaded. If a single LED is lit, you have aconnection to your FC fabric - that's good. The colour of the LED will tell you what speed the HBA's connected at. You can find the details here:
http://solutions.qlogic.co
Once you've got the HBA connected to teh fabric, you have to configure the Fibre Channel switch to allow the HBA to connect to your storage and you'll have to map some storage to the host. How that's done depends on the SAN manufacturer. What SAN are you trying to connect to?
Hi meyersd,
Thanks for the info. That was very promising, and it looks like I'm headed in the right direction. I looked at the HBA, and I saw the 3 flashing lights (yellow, green, and amber), which could indicate that the drivers aren't loaded yet? I'm confused because when I was trying to download the QLogic driver, I was referred to this website:
http://filedownloa
I
---------------------
A download is not required for this Linux distribution. The QLogic driver is included in the kernel package and the supported QLogic Fibre Channel
Host Bus Adapters are automatically detected.
Driver source code is included in the kernel source RPM available for this Linux distribution.
--------------------------
The OS we're using is Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) version 5.1.
And besides, when I tried to run "qlinstall" I thought the driver has been loaded?
What else am I missing here?
Thanks for any help / info you can provide,
Download the IBM-approved firmware and BIOS from here: http://driverdownloads.qlo
The LED pattern suggests that the drivers have loaded, but there is no connection to the FC switch. What make and model is the switch you're trying to connect to? Also - try a new cable. Shining a torch down the cable does not prove that the cable is OK, unfortunately.
Incidentally, the speed LED won't light until a Fibre Channel handshake (called a FLOGI) has completed with the FC switch, so it's more complex than good ol' Ethernet.
Hi meyersd,
Thanks again for responding. I clicked on that link that you sent me. Within
that page, towards the middle where it says "Driver" I clicked on the approriate
link for our OS (which is RHEL5.1), and it took me to the same link in my original
posting, which basically says that the drivers have been pre-loaded with the Linux
kernel. And as for the BIOS and firmware, they've been already installed by the
IBM technician who was here last week.
I also opened a ticket with QLogic, and this is what they told me:
http://solutions.qlogic.co
Do you have any other ideas?
Thanks in advance for your help,
-Conrad
>Brocade DS_300B, which is connected to our CLARiiON CX4-480.
That's teh critical piece of information. If the IBM engineer installed IBM approved firmware and BIOS, then that's likely the source of your problems. Download the EMC approved driver, BIOS and firmware from here: http://driverdownloads.qlo
Hi meyersd,
I think we're on the right track - I clicked on the link that you sent me,
and searched for my appropriate OS, and bingo - it specifies the firmware
version of 8.01.07-k7, which is actually lower than what we have right now.
The current firmware is actually 8.02.23-3, so it looks like I'll have to
downgrade it.
Thanks for your help,
-Conrad
