Typical premium USB flash memory sticks can write up to about 15MB/sec. Some write at MUCH slower speeds. So if your question is really, "my network to USB file saving performance is awful .. what is the best case scenario?" Then read the specs on your stick. You could very well have a stick that can't write any faster than 5-10MB/sec. If you plan on doing a lot of USB file saving then get yourself an eSATA card for your dell and use an external eSATA-attached HD. Anything less will not be able to keep up with a 1Gbit ethernet port.

"Real World" performance will depend on a variety of factors not limited to the device at each end of the cable.
How big are the files ?, speeds can be increased by disabling antivirus, running through safe mode etc
