The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

stubborn malware

Asked by msaayman in Desktop Anti-Virus, Anti-Virus, Anti-Virus Applications

Having a problem with a virus on our network. Start menus on Windows XP Sp2 getting changed was the first found symptom. Submenu folders get removed and new "submenus" get created which are in fact exes and not folders. Exes also get created in some folders with exe names matching folder names. Doesnt happen in all folders but no apparent pattern to spread on the PC.

Startup items are added, adding any files found in the C root to the startup list as shown in msconfig.
A process called schedl.exe is started. killing this process and removing files/settings identified to be part of this problem does not cure it. 2-5 minutes after the PC shows as "clean" by all tools and manual checks the problem is back.

Trend, AVG free, sophos standalone, Spybot S&D, avg antispyware, Lavasoft 1.06 Pro Advanced Windows Care 2.40 all show no threat found when used to scan. PC is patched to the max on MS patches and all Malware scanners up to date on definitions. Process explorer does not show any suspicious processes running.

Only one result googling on the schedl.exe which is the only clearly identifyable signature of the threat. Prevx1 lists this as a malware problem with no info as to cause, effect or cure beyond saying "here's a tool to clean it". This "tool" is unstable during install AND scanning, crashing a number of times then after scanning eventually for 1hour+ tries to talk to a database online to identify problems. This fails due to "connectivity problems"

Has anyone else experienced and successfully killed/cured this?
