Question

Symantec 'vpmsece3.dll' add-in causing outlook 2007 error message when mail opened. HELP

Since installing symantec client antivirus a message now pops up when users open there first Outlook 2007 email stating "The Add-in 'Wymantec Antivirus' (C:\program files\symantec antivirus\vpmsece3.dll) cannot be loaded and has been disabled by Outlook.  Please contact the add-in manufacturer for an update.  If no update is available, please uninstall the add-in".  I researched this and found that an article was posted in KB on Symantecs site stating unhide files and search for extend.dat then delete.  I searched and found no files.  I also repaired the office install without luck and reinstalled the antivirus suite without success.  Do you know how to remove this add-in or resolve this issue?

From the symantec site:  (You must be logged in with local administrator rights)

Exit Outlook if the program is open.
On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
In the Open box, type cmd and then click OK.
At the command prompt type the following command and then press Enter:

cd %appdata%


The prompt should show the Application Data folder for the current local user.
If the command does not work, use the cd command with the full path to the current local user's Application Data folder. For example:

cd "C:\Documents and Settings\%$local_user>\Local Settings\Application Data"

where %$local_user> is the name of the current local user.


Type cd microsoft\outlook and then press Enter.


Type del extend.dat and then press Enter.
Delete the Extend.dat file for every user local account on the computer.
Restart the computer.

Note: On some versions of Windows, a user folder called LocalService is present. For example, on Windows XP, you may need to delete a copy of the Extend.dat file from the folder \Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.

Funny thing is, I searched (hidden files shown) and found no extend.dat.  Your way found it!  Good job

It is located:  Windows 2000/XP
C:\Documents and Settings\%Username%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Your search may not have found the extend.dat files if it only included Hidden files/folders. I recommend searching System folders as well.
