Virus/Spyware scanner - pre-install?

If I download a file or program from the web, how can I be sure it doesn't contain a virus or spyware before I install it?
Is there a way to scan files or programs BEFORE they are installed. Any commercial programs recomended for this purpose?

The best way is to only download installs from a trusted source.  Even the best virus/spyware programs can't reliable scan the contents of all installs to make sure they are virus/malware free.  Even if it is clean at the install it doesn't mean the program itself can't download or behave as a virus/malware.

The key is a reliable download from a reliable source.  Anything else is going to be risky.

Hi,

"Real time scan" of any antivirus monitors real time activities which is in this case "installation of software". So, using a combination of antivirus and antisypware is a good way to protect your PC from such threats.
