The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

AntiVirus Software for USB drives, sticks

I'm looking for realtime antivirus software for a usb drive.  The antivirus software should protect the usb drive so that a virus could not copy it self to the drive.  I would also like to scan the host system on demand.  I'm looking for a solution that does not require U3.

Some options I already looked into:
ClamWin - Can be installed on a usb drive but does not have real time protection.
Avast U3 Edition - seems too expensive and requires U3.

What is the best Antivirus software for a usb drive?

When you say realtime do you mean something that is constantly running on the USB pen drive when not connected to a PC ? If so that is not possible. No power no function in USB.

you might want to look at these
http://www.castlecops.com/p907410-AVG_Free_installation_on_a_USB_Drive_Pen.html

http://askthegeek.kennyhart.com/2005/12/how-to-make-bootable-thumb-drive-virus.html

If your looking for something to be able to plug the USB drive into a PC and scan your probably stuck looking at U3 because any other usb jump drive is not going to have security on it to protect it from being written to by a virus.

You would be better off building a Bart PE bootdisk with virus scanners on it. If your looking for a cheap way out. Otherwise your going to have to go U3

I mean that when I plug the usb drive into a computer, it should protect it self so that a virus cannot copy itself to the drive.

Also I should be able to tell the software to scan the drive and also scan the host pc.

Here's one from McAfee but it also requires U3:
http://us.mcafee.com/root/package.asp?pkgid=269

I agree with briancassin in that you will probably need to go with U3.

Also, if you are looking for a solution to clean flash drives try Flash Disinfector by sUBs.

Tool: http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/Flash_Disinfector.exe
Info and instructions: http://experi3nc3.wordpress.com/2007/05/10/flash-disinfector-by-subs/

Only U3 offers that protection any other USB pen / jump drive by design is designed to be instantly readable and writeable and in most cases windows will autoplay it the minute it is plugged in which means a virus can jump right on it then. Your only choice is going to be going U3 or stick with CD's if a U3 is too much money.

I just find U3 annoying because it takes longer to load the drive, it makes 2 drive letters, and you have to eject it, plus it comes with a bunch of other annoying programs I don't need.

But if I have to use U3, does anyone know if this is a good program? http://software.u3.com/Product_Details.aspx?ProductId=334&Selection=7&Lang=en-US

I have never heard of that product but checking several sites it was once listed as a Rogue anti spyware product which means it either installed spyware to only turn around and claimed it has removed it, it exhibited spyware or malware traits... basically it had something shady about it.  Other sites list it as a poor performer and false positives.

I would go with a major AV vendor when it comes to a U3 device.

here is a list of Rogue products
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm#products

Avast has a U3 product

I'm just going to use ClamWin Portable for now on all USB drives and maybe get a couple copies of the Mcafee U3 version.

By the way, I made a webpage with some usefull antiVirus tools:  http://wanaddress.com/AntiVirusTools.cfm

this application is more powerful from any other application. and it's really simple to use.

I disagree with bashgash. There are any number of antivirus programs that are able to be stored on a USB drive, but the USB Disk Security one seems to be a bit suss. The only antivirus that I have found that works on any form of a USB drive with realtime protection is the U3 series of antivirus programs, of which avast is my preferred option. As with desktop antivirus programs, you get what you pay for. I think avast is a good U3 program, mcafee a close second (still has issues unloading itself before a U3 ejection).
