The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Trojan Horse Dropper.Generic.IMA

Recently I used AVG trial version and it detected Trojan Horse Dropper.Generic.IMA & virus Win32/Fujacks and put all the infected files into $AVG8.VAULT$ folder in C drive. How do I clean these files and restore them back. As some of these .exe and .html files are very important to me. Are there any other cleaning tools that i can use as AVG can't clean and hence puts them into its VAULT.

this talks about it.

you would have to restore it. Then try running something like trendmicro online scan.

Hello,

I would first recommend we try to identify and clean your malware up. Then the files that are infected we may or may not be able to restore. If this was a file infector like AWF or the Vundo variant you may be able to clean them, but that's not a guarantee.

I suggest that you download, run, and upload a HijackThis log from the link below.

http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HJTInstall.exe

Click on "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. Post the text from the log file. Do not have HJT fix anything at this point.

Please do not post the log into the comment window. Use "Attach File" under the comment window to post the log.

Malware doesn't attach to normal programs that i know of. Viruses could, but that is Trojan. So you may not be able to save those anyway.

Yes it's a nasty one here. Not sure if you will be able to "clean" what is in your vault. Let's first try to get your PC clean as it is pretty infected.

Download SDFix (by Andy Machesta) and save it to your Desktop.
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Double click on SDFix.exe. It should automatically extract a folder called SDFix to your system drive (usually C:\). Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.

Open the SDFix folder and double click on RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y and press Enter to begin the script.
It will start cleaning your PC and then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any key to restart the PC.
Your system will take longer than normal to restart as the fixtool will be removing files.
When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished.
Press any key to end the script and to load your desktop icons.

A text file should automatically open, please upload that.

Please also upload a fresh HijackThis log.

Hello IndiGenus,
As per your guidelines here are the two log files again- What Next?

The log looks clean. I think you are clear of the malware. And the files that were quarantined probably are not savable. If they are trojans, then you can't use them anyway with out re-infection, so you should find a free program to do the same thing without malware.

Yes I agree it looks clean. The other thing I thought of is that the files you are referring to in the vault could be false positives. You mentioned they were important files to you. What are they? Were they created by you? You could upload them to Jotti or one of the others and have them scanned by several scanners.

Go to http://virusscan.jotti.org, click on Browse, and upload the following files for analysis, one at a time.

03.25.2008 at 08:59AM PDT, ID: 21203123
Hello IndiGenus,
I did send the files to jotti.org and it says no virus found with all the scanners. As you said earlier does this mean a false positive? and would it be safe to restore the exe's. These exe's are created by me and they are important to  me as I do not have version controlled source code of the same.

Hi Fritz,

Well I'd say since you are the creator I would hope you'd know whether they were safe or not ;)
AVG probably picked them up as bad because of the fact it didn't recognize them and they are executables...I'd say you're pretty safe and yes that is a false positive.

Good luck,
Dave

Hello Dave,
Well I think I close this with you and I hope i'm well protected now on as I have installed AVG trial version and plan to activate it after a month. Any suggestion for a better protection for my laptop - I do browse the internet all the time.
Thanks,
Fritz

Hi Fritz,

I you are using the new full AVG security suite that will also include a Firewall and real time spyware protection too, so that is good. There are some other free small programs you can add like SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard, which will block malicious ActiveX controls and add sites to your hosts file to restrict them. Download and and installation instructions can be found at the following link (warning, shameless plug for my own site :)

http://www.anti-malwareoutlook.com/how-do-i-protect-myself-from-infection/

Good luck Fritz,
Dave
