The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Tags: C:\WINDOWS\System32\Rundll32.exe     Application not found, I believe is a virus or malware that does not let me open any application from the desktop. Also I cant change the background for the desktop, Access is denied to registry, System  Restore and more
I am trying to clean a computer running XP Home that was very infested. After cleaning the system using AVG 8, Spyware Doctor and RegCure finally I was able to use the Internet, and only one threath remained in the system: Trojan-Downloader.Small.GEN, which, after many attempts,  I thought it was cleaned. I tried deliting a couple of values on the registry to get rid of the threath.
 Also from the begining it was not possible to change the desktop's background , browsing was not an option either and the Theme files were hidden. Access is denied to Registry  to System Restore and does not let install the antivirus again ( i  uninstalled  and when I tried to re-install a box opens asking wich program I want to use to run the application.
I do not now what is Code Snippet

I will appreciate very much if somebody can give me an idea on how to resolve this issue.
Thank you,

Hi,
When I try do download Hijakthis I get the same error message:
C:\DOCUME~1\Mama\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for HijackThis[1].zip\HijackThis.exe

Application not found

Also, I am sending you a copy of the DESKTOP.INI file in
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\ Start Menu\Desktop.ini

The file DESKTOP.INI in C:\Windows\DESKTOP.INI is empty

[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@shell32.dll,-21786
[LocalizedFileNames]
Windows Catalog.lnk=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-22075
Activate Windows.lnk=@%SystemRoot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe,-2000
Set Program Access and Defaults.lnk=@xpsp1res.dll,-10077

I think this file was altered

The DESKTOP.INI file settings are correct. Do you have access to another computer onto which you could download the file, and then copy it to the problem computer via a flash drive?

You have SDBot entry showing in your logfile. Rund SDFix first and show us the logfile.You might not need combofix.

Run these these tools:
1.  Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.zip

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

* Restart your computer
* After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
*  Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
*  Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
*  Choose your usual account.

*  Open the extracted folder and double click "RunThis.bat" to start the script.
*  Type "Y" to begin the script.
*  It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
*  Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
*  Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
*  When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display "Finished", then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
*  Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and attach the contents of the results file "Report.txt" back

2.  download ComboFix to your Desktop, from either of these locations:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
