avp.exe using high CPU

Recently my PC has started running extremely slowly and seemed to be when using Outlook. After some investigation I found the avp.exe was using a high amount of CPU (nearly 100%) when I was attempting to use Outlook specifically. I have three avp.exe processes running for user, system, and my user at any one time and I am not sure if this is normal activity. I have tried uninstalling Kaspersky antivirus and reinstalling as this is the application the process relates too, but the problem persists.

I am running Windows XP SP3.

I have had a good look around the internet but cannot find any answers that seem to relate to my specific problem and am desperate for some suggestions!

HELP!!!

Which version of KAspersky are we talking about here ?

how is the Disk space & fragmentation level doing on your system Drive ?

Do you have any other security software installed ?

is Kaspersky Antispam / AV mail filter active ?

Kaspersky Version is Internet security 2009.
Disk space is only 60% used and I have been defragmenting my drive regularly.
I have no other security software installed.
Yes, the antispam/av mail filter is active.

Can you please check the application & sytem event viewer for any possible errors that are logged by either avp or by outlook ?

start>run>eventvwr.msc

also to configure the outlook plugin, please take a look at the below link

you can control the depth of heuristic scans , configure protection scope and tweak other program settings.

Thank you very much for your suggestions.

Since the last batch of windows updates my problem seems to be resolved. I am unsure as to what corrected the problem but avp.exe no longer spikes my CPU usage.

I will monitor my machines performance and also configure the outlook plugin as suggested.
