Thunderbird and AVG Free

On a new Vista Home Premium computer I have AVG Free installed.  It says that it is scanning eMail and that this is functional.  I use Thunderbird as my eMail client.  When I receive eMail I suspect the AVG is not scanning it since I do not get the certification at the bottom of the eMail as I do on other computers.
