Question

AVG 8 command line scanner not working - avgscanx.exe

Asked by: LanMan6401

I currently use AVG for an external email scanner. I would like to update to version 8 but the command line does not work.  I've tried many different combinations but none of them actually scan the file.

Here is a complex sample I tried:
avgscanx /HEUR /SCAN /ARC /RT /NOBREAK /NOBOOT /NOMEM /NOHIMEM eicar.com

The eicar.com file was in the same directory as the avgscanx.exe file.  I've also tried exact directory path with the file as well.

I've also tried doing a simple command line scan like avgscanx /scan eicar.com.  Still nothing.  I can right click the file and scan from the explorer shell and it detects it fine.

The command line looks like it is scanning the file but logs "no objects scanned"

Any ideas?

HI,

For what its worth I have exactly the same issue.

I cannot find any documentation anywhere explaining or helping with the problem.

Support email to Grisoft has got me nowhere!

Will keep looking here in the hope that someone answers your post.

Good luck!

OK

I now have the scanner working but not returning any code other than zero - even if a virus is found and removed.

"[AGENT]" /SCAN="[FILENAME]" /ARC /EXT=* /HEUR /CLEAN

And select the option not to use return codes (as whatever happens - excepting errors - zero is returned)

This seems to work.

AVGSCANX.EXE has different parameters to the previos command line scanner.  Try AVGSCANX /? to get a list.

Unfortunately that appears to be only part of the solution  the syntax appears to be different to the help! Some old parameters still work even tho undocumented e.g.

"C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgscanx.exe"  /SCANCFG:3 /SCANTYPE:3 /SCAN:"\\Fileserver\store" /REPORT:"c:\scan.log"   /ARC

I am still trying to work out what everything is.

/SCANTYPE seem to have 4 valid values

0=unknown
1=Shell Extension
2=Whole Computer
3=Specific Files

I have not checked this on another PC yet, so very preliminary.

/SCANCFG (Seems broken, but might just be my installation)

0=Commandline interface shows what is scanned but only does some files/directories
1=Seems to do a complete scan
2=meant to scan directories but only does some files/directories
3=seems to work!

With some options It doesn't scan the whole directory structure you give it!  It seems to scan part of it, not sure what it scans, but appears to have problems negotiating it's way around directories.

This bug also happens if you use the AVG interface

I have not checked this on another PC yet, so very preliminary.

Update

I have tired this on a couple of PC's now.

If you scan a network path AVG scans some files but not all files.

In my test, of the 10978 files in the directory AVG scanned 2662

This is bizarre, it is verified on separate machines and is so serious you would have thought someone would have spotted it in the first few days!

I would disbelieve my own findings if I had not repeated them and double checked.

anyone else finding AVG not scanning some files on file shares?

Had the same problem also, ended up with command line in batch files.. which also failed unless I had it repeated over four times in which case it ran ok.
Still looking at other configurations.
