Question

Where do I find the SMTP To: and MIME To: fields?

Asked by: grethhomes

Hello all,
I apologize if I'm doing anything incorrectly in advance, this is the first post i've ever made on EE. Here's my issue:
- I oversee the Marketing for my company and like doing e-marketing as much as possible. I also now have to oversee technology but have little experience with it. Long story short, I sent an e-mail to a group of past customer we have to get some feedback from them, and one of the people that responded had the following message in thier email header, "RE: [SPAM] - Focus Group Questions - Email has different SMTP TO: and MIME TO: fields in the email addresses".

Can someone please enlighten me as to what this message means and how I can fix it? The obvious tells me my message looks like SPAM (which is why half of the e-mails came back undeliverable i'm assuming), so I need to dodge that bullet immediately. Please help!

ps. I attached the full header in the "code" section.
Thanks,
Brandon

You posted the headers of the email from the person telling you about the problem, not from the original message itself.

That said, what are you using to send the mailing? If you are using Outlook you should really look at using a proper service as you will get much better delivery of your messages. There are a lot of email service providers out there with economical solutions for sending to lists that will keep you from getting blocked. I don't work for them but sell software to them and I know there's providers out there for senders of all shapes and sizes.

Hi Squeebee,
Thanks for responding. I'm not quite sure how to show you the headers from the original? I am using Outlook 2003 to send the messages and we have an in house exchange server that handles all of our e-mail. For doing mass e-mailing I do typically use an e-mail service, but this is a pretty basic correspondence, therefore I didn't see it being necessary to do so. I also sent the email to the address I sent it from, and the intended recipients were all BCC'ed in the email. When I pull up the e-mail that came into that accounts inbox, there's nothing in the "internet headers" displayed. I also tried pulling it up from the Sent Items, and no internet headers were there either?

by: edster9999Posted on 2008-12-08 at 08:46:02ID: 23121777

send the email again this time just to yourself - but send it in the same way and bcc yourself.

Now receive the mail and open that and copy the headers out of that

by: grethhomesPosted on 2008-12-08 at 08:55:49ID: 23121877

So, I sent the exact e-mail again to myself in a BCC and also another email with myself in the To: field, and no header information. Correct me if i'm wrong, but if i'm sending the e-mail to an address that is on the same domain (keep in mind our email is done in-house) there would be no internet header because it didn't go outside of our office?

by: SqueebeePosted on 2008-12-08 at 09:07:18ID: 23121968

Send it to a web mail account, at least Gmail has the ability to show the original message with headers.

by: edster9999Posted on 2008-12-08 at 09:16:51ID: 23122040

It would still have some header info if you send it on the same domain.... just not the routing bit.
You know how to see it, right ?  You open the email in a seperate window (ie more than just previewing it) click tools / options (or just click on the little down arrow below options in 2007) and then copy the stuff in the bottom box.

by: grethhomesPosted on 2008-12-08 at 09:29:48ID: 23122155

Ok so here's where i'm at. I created a Gmail account for testing with the email address grethhomes@gmail.com. I sent the message again to myself in the To: filed and BCC'ed the grethhomes@gmail.com account. Attached is the full header information from the original email.

Edster, I did check the emails numerous times that were going to email accounts on our domain (anything with grethhomes.com) and there was absolutely nothing in the internet header window.

ps. thank you all so much for your help!

Sincerely,
Brandon

It's Focus Group question time! Let us start by saying welcome, and
"Thank you" to our newest members! Hopefully everyone is enjoying their
Friday and anticipating a nice relaxing weekend.=20

=20

So, it's been quite some time since we've asked the group a question and
we apologize for the delay. A lot of changes have been made at Greth
Homes and we've been working extra hard to meet customer's needs. While
still maintaining the customer satisfaction we're honored to provide, we
have many questions in the works for the Focus Group, so stay tuned!

=20

The topic for this particular question pertains to Sales/Marketing.
Primarily what we are looking for is to get a better grasp of just how
technologically dependent our customers have become on the internet as
well as particular websites in comparison to those of you who are loyal
newspaper and print publication readers.=20

=20

The Question: If you were to start shopping for a new home builder or
were thinking of buying a new home today, what would be the first two
(2) places you would look? Print or Web? Why?=20

=20

This is a very broad question, which is going to hopefully provide us
with some new insight as to where our market may be, and also what
marketing and advertising outlets are our strongest/weakest points.
Please be as specific as you can, and then explain why you would choose
those sources.=20

=20

For example, if you would pick-up a Buyers Real Estate Weekly, why would
you choose that before maybe the Real Estate Book or the Reading Eagle?
If you would choose the web for your source of information, what sites
would you visit first and why? Would you search on Yahoo, Google, or MSN
for New Home Builders in general?=20

=20

This question will be open for response for 1 week (please respond by
Friday December 12th).

=20

Thank you very much in advance and we can't wait to see your responses!

=20

Sincerely,

The Greth Homes Team

That is laid out correctly.  The header info is all in the top part where it should be.  It is possible to incorectly add header info into the html part of the message but this is not being done so this should send/receive fine (as it did).

Is this exactly the same way you sent the other mail ?  You used the same program, the same format and the same way of sending ?

If so the company you are sending into has very tight restrictions on its spam firewall.  If it is one or two companies that you email regularly you could ask them to loosen that requirement or to whitelist you (put you on a list of good senders)

Well that in that case I'm not going to stress over it too much. It was only that recipient that had the error in the subject of thier response, and it isn't someone we need to contact often. Although there was an error regarding the SMTP and MIME fields, she did still get the e-mail. The other underliverables I had mentioned above I recently found out were due to someone not updating information....nice to know now.

Anyway thanks a ton for the help, it's much appreciated.

Sincerely,
Brandon
