Question

What AntiVirus works best for SBS 2008 with Exchange 2007

Asked by: ServerPoster

I have Windows Small Business Server 2008.  I'm running Exchange Server 2007 on it.

What antivirus (anti-virus) should i use?  I tired AVG 8, but the Exchange Plug-in does not work.

I heard the Live OneCare for Server is a good choice.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks!

I would say "Forefront Server Security" from Microsoft. The reason is it uses multiple scanning engines.

Hi,

I heard that there is a trial on the SBS 2008 install CD.  I'll look into that.  Not sure what the pricing is on it though.

Thanks.

Any other suggestions?

I always use something different on Exchange than the clients. So if you have AVG everywhere, something different will be a good choice. Usual selection is GFI Mail Security. It also uses multiple engines like Forefront.

Okay.  So I'm going to install Forefront and/or Live OnceCare.

Someone suggested I install both.  Is that possible or can you only run one or the other?

thanks!!

Live OneCare for servers or whatever it is called is a dead product. Microsoft are removing it. Therefore don't even bother with installing it.
Forefront is an active product for Exchange so will be fine co-existing which whatever else you decide to install on the server.

I'm still a little confused.  So far i think this is my understanding.

1. Forefront is Antivirus and Spam protection for Exchange only.
2. Live OneCare is antivirus for the rest of the server.

Is this correct?

Also, why is it a dead product? are they removing support for it?

If the above comments are correct should I just use Forefront to protect my Exchange and then load AVG8 for Windows to protect my files?  I might be totally off on my understanding of this.

Thanks!

The whole OneCare product is being dropped I believe as Microsoft are releasing a free solution in June 2009.
Take your pick from these stories, it has been extensively reported:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=onecare+discontinued

If you have a license for AVG, then install that on the server. It will be fine.

Hi,

Thanks for the info!

I have AVG, but the Exchange Plug-in does NOT work :(  Their tech support could not figure out the issue.

So far I have Un-installed AVG completely and then Installed Forefront.

So you are saying i should install the AVG for windows again, but leave off the Exchagne plugin since Forefront should be covering the exchange server?

Thanks for all the info!!!

by: RickEpnetPosted on 2009-01-30 at 09:53:02ID: 23510882

That should work

You don't have to use the Exchange plugin. I would actually encourage you not to. By using another product you get dual protection. Just ensure the exclusions are in place.

AVG protects the file system, Forefront protects the Exchange traffic.

Excellent, thats for all the advice!

"Just ensure the exclusions are in place."  What exclusions are you referring to?  I'm very new to server protection so some basics go over my head.

Thanks again!!

A file based AV product should not scan some of the Exchange directories. This can cause problems with the delivery of the email and operation of an Exchange aware AV product. Therefore you have to put exclusions in to the product.
Although most AV products are "Exchange Aware" and shouldn't need the exclusions in manually, I personally continue to put them in.

This is the MS kb article on the process:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823166

What I do is exclude the entire /exchsrvr directory, plus the location of the transaction logs and the location of the databases.

I have seen other AV products (Symantec usually) quarantine an entire Exchange database because of one infected item. Of course that brings down Exchange and usually results in a corrupted database. Messy.
