Question

Any value to Symantec Endpoint Protection Certification

Asked by: CohKarlHaskins

I'm going to training next month, I'm not look for a new job, but SEP certification seems like a good idea to me. That's something I'd like to add to my resume.

Is there any real value. My supervisor doesn't care and I have to earn some certification before the end of the year.

Anyone out there SEP certified? How was the exam? Any good study materials? The practice exam was pretty easy.

If the boss is paying for it - GO!
In this business, any certifications count for something.
Since the boss is giving you the OK, I imagine that you are running it on your systems/network - so it will be a great opportunity for you to make contacts you can 'network' with later on.
I went to some Symantec training years ago and maintained on-going correspondence with several of the staff and students.

As I recall, the certification(s) were all basically 'taught to' by the instructors. They wanted to make sure that all of us could pass after just going through the training (it has been a few years).

Thanks, for your comment. I was looking to see if anyone here had this particular certification, to see if there was any benefit. I've spent enought time with SEP to have a good skill set, just want to fill in the blanks by going to training.

The certification is really not necessary for me but I might pay for it if I can find value.

If you're paying for it yourself then I wouldn't bother , as you say you have a good skill & have been playing with SEP for long enough. If there is ever anything that you do get stuck with then the training probably won't cover this. It'll be basic bog standard Installation , Configuration & Maintenance ... what you probably do already. You'd only benefit from the social networking that may or may not happen.

You'd probably be better of going for a different training course , something that you don't know much about but would improve your job prospects at your current employment or help you find better employment elsewhere , depending on your long term goals. It does boil down to what your job role currently is and what you'd like it to be. ie , CISCO , SQL , Security .

If your Boss is paying for it , then go for it , no question!!!

Yeah the company is paying for training. What I'm really trying to put value on is the certification. For the cost of the exam (which may be reimbursed when I pass), is there any value other than stuff on a resume?

It will validate me as a subject matter expert in the eyes of my superiors and peers.

I guess I just answered my question.

I was hoping that someone with the certification would read the thread.

It could be that not many people have the qualification =P

If your reason for wanting the qualification is so that you appear as an expert or qualified to people looking in then go for it. I'm sure though that if you already have good knowledge with SEP , then to your colleagues and peers you'd already appear as an expert.

As I said, if work are paying for the training , and you have some hope of being re-imbersed for the exam , then go for it . Qualifications are always nice for bosses , current or prospective to look at.
