iPrism Blocking Google Earth

Asked by: MrLandShark

I use the iPrism Internet filer to monitor my Internet traffic.  When users try using the Google Earth application it will not work properly.  With the iPrism off Google Earth works. Does anyone know how to setup iPrism to allow Google Earth to work?

All filtering on an iPrism is done by category and/or specific user-built rules. You, or the admin if that's not you, can log into the iPrism and run the real-time monitoring app and monitor a user as they attempt to access Google earth and see what categories pop while accessing the site.  Then the access for that level of user can be adjusted appropriately or a rule can be written to allow all of Google earth through.

When users access they do not show up in the real time monitor.  They do show up when they go to a standard web site (yahoo, google...) but not when they run Google Earth.

I see... missed that you were running an app in your original post.

Try these things:

1. Open IE, or any other browser, and go to any Internet site that you are allowed to go to. This will "authenticate" you through the iPrism device.  I've seen where some "background" processes won't work because they can't do the authentication, but once authentication is done, any of these kinds of processes should now work, assuming that they are allowed in the first place.

2. Try adding these sites to your allowed list in the iPrism:

kh.google.com
maps.google.com
auth.keyhole.com

I heard from iPrism support and they suggested adding those same sites to the allow list.
I have done that and eventually got it to work on my PC.  When I tried it on other PCs it did not.  Some would get an error on opening Google Earth saying it could not reach the Earth Server.  Others got an error after entering an address into the search.  It would say it does not recognize that address. The address would be a street address, city name or just a zip code, they got the same error.
With the iPrism turned off Google Earth would work OK on all PCs.

Does your PC or any of the others have the iPrism IP address and port in the Proxy settings?  We run ours inline so don't have to have that entered in, but sometimes it seems to help.  I'd try both with and without and go to some external web site first before starting the app to see if the authentication through the iPrism has any effect on your ability to get there from your PC or others.

Some of our machines that are setup with different IPs than the standard scheme are setup with the iPrism settings in IE.  Most are not.  I will try that on machies with the standard scheme and see what happens.   Any ideas why the problem is only with the Google Earth app?

The only thing I can think of right off is that it's the only application that is trying to access the Internet. Most Internet access is usually done through the browser.  But "background" or non-IE type apps can sometimes cause this issue. That's why some of the techniques listed above work.

Good Morning All,

With the affected client machines, you may need to perform an ipconfig /flushdns.  I've had this issue a couple of times where after adding domains to the filter exception within iPrism sys config, the clients for some reason do not resolve correctly.

The problem appears to be based on the PC.  One solution worked on one Pc while the other solution worked on another PC. I also found some PCs that worked without any changes or adjustments.
