We got a local repository, a copy of mcafee's own update repository.and communication to that repository-machine should be set to a single port and not random ports as it is out of the box.

What I'd like someone that uses protection pilot (which can define an update port) to do, is monitor the registry while changing the port configuration (with regmon for example). Maybe it is a setting that, though only configurable through pp, can be used without deploying pp.
Thanks
PS: McAfee told me to use pp but it's only important for a single computer and pp setup is a heavy 320 MB. The possibilty of configuring a http-update path is not an option.

How are you configuring your machines to update from this repository. are you using HTTP, FTP, UNC, or Local path?
Outside of ePO and PP, it is very hard to set a VSE8 machine as a repository.
You would be best to run Windows FTP services via IIS and setup the repository that way. Then you will be able to connect to the repository on a designated port.
OK, I'll be more specific: We create a repository by using auto update architect. This repository (a windows share) gets used by many clients through unc. However a single client has to be secured more than all the others, the open ports should be limited to the ones needed. If I use unc - too many ports needed. http: is even configurable but uses more than the defined port, don't know why. ftp: haven't tried yet, I will.
Do you use PP? I am looking for someone that uses PP who is willing to do that registry monitoring for me.
I use ePolicy Orchestrator. Haven't used PP before, but normally dealing with lager size customers who need the features of ePO.
How were you using FTP? You should be able to setup IIS to use FTP on port 21. That way you will only need to use 20 and 21. VirusScan can use both Active and Passive FTP. It sounds like you have Passive FTP running (Random high port above 1024). If you use Active, it should limit to the 2 ports.
I think that you will find that Protection Pilot operates similiarly to ePO.

Are you talking about using McAfee VirusScan 8 as an update site for other machines?
