Question

Disabling Automatic Liveupdate

Asked by: johndl

I have set up a PC to act as a server at home and have installed Norton Internet Security 2007.  The PC then took to stopping anything from 1 to 5 times day.  Looking at the reports in Event Viewer, I noted that the stops always appeared to be related to NIS going online for some sort of update.  On the Symantec website, I found a note that they had had reports that NIS automatic liveupdate could cause systems to stop.  However, Symantec had not been able to reproduce the fault and there was 'no solution'.  They recommended a workround of turning off automatic liveupdate.  I did this, but found that the automatic liveupdate service was still running, so I opened the service, stopped it and changed its status from automatic to disabled.  The PC was then fully stable, no stops at all.

However, if I reboot, the automatic liveupdate service is mysteriously reset to automatic and started, presumably by NIS, and so my PC again has the problem of these occasional stops, until I open the automatic liveupdate service, stop it and disable it.

Does anyone know of any action I can take either to prevent automatic liveupdate from stopping the PC in the first place, or alternatively how can I stop NIS from resetting it on reboot?

Try going to Configure --> Tamper Protection from NIS, and see if there is an applicable option.

Try start->run and type msconfig and the last tab (start up) and the 2nd last (services) remove the tick from the srvices.

What happend is the service is registered to start at the startup so you need to remove it from the starupt list.

Good luck

Hi

First, pmartin524, I couldn't find this configuration control - can you give more information on where it might be found?

Hakim, I thought for a moment this might have done it, but no.  I have the service disabled in msconfig, but after booting, there it sits large as life on 'automatic'. , which of course allows Norton to start it and seemingly as a result, the machine to stop.

Any more suggestions?

Regards

Further info.

I tried renaming the file AluSchedulerSvc.exe, which starts the Symantec automatic liveupdate service, but Windows would not allow  this, so I rebooted in safe mode, which did allow me to rename it.  I'll see what happens now.  I would still like to know if anyone can advise what might make a machine stop when automatic liveupadte runs?

Regards

Hi

You experts seem as baffled as me on this one!

Further info.  I have had to disable the liveupdate exe file as well.  if this starts, live update runs and uupadtes NIS, but I have problems afterwords with the PC freezing.  Can anyone advise possible causes of this freezing?  All other operations of the PC seem normal.

Regards
