Question

SAVservice.exe using 100% cpu on startup

Hi,
Its a pretty new laptop on a network, I take it home most evenings and it is slow to boot up, savservice.exe s chewing up the CPU up to 100%, same thing happens when i bring it back in to the office nd boot up, i can kill the savservice.exe and the problem goes away! however, the AV I'm running is Sophos and savservice.exe is an executable associated with the Sophos AV product.
I've looked around and found some articles on what might be causing this but there does not seem to be any pop up's or un wanted programs listed in control panel.

dont have it. I do have bit torrent and google talk installed, other than that i think the machine pretty clean

Does it drop from 100% CPU usage after a while? This is normal as it is going online and downloads the newest AV definitions, then checks the main system files for possible infections. This can take some time and most antivirus programs act similarly.

ok, that sounds like it but it seems to jump up during the day, mainly while trying to access the network,

Particularly when accessing files on the LAN it'll scan the files for virii, and that will also use CPU power, also while you are on the LAN it will periodically do updates, as far as I know sophos goes online more than once a day.

Yes, or try different AV software, some might be a bit less resource hungry. You could also disable the auto update functions, but then you'd have to make sure you did that manually regularly.
