Question

McAfee - Filesite - Outlook running slow

Asked by: sutclk

I have recently upgraded my companies Mcafee Virus Scanner from version 8 to 8.5. We also use the Filesite add in for outlook 2002.
When users scroll up and down the folder list in Outlook, to view thier filesite workspaces (and thier inbox) the CPU maxes out on on the outlook.exe process and casues the computer to hang and generally run very slow.

Can anyone shed any light on this and possibly a fix.............?

Greetings sutclk !

Others have experience in using McAfee Enterprise 8.5.  Check with McAfee support to see if there is a hotfix for the slowness.

If no joy, disable the McAfee addin in Outlook.  Go to Tools > Addin Manager and uncheck McAfee Virus Scan.

Best wishes, war1

Hi War1, your comments greatly appreciated, I accessed my add-in manager but was unable to find McAfee Virus Scan add-in and couldnt find anything related to mcafee. But I did find the interwoven extention add-in, which I disabled, and the problem went away. This confirms my suspicions that it is Filesite - Mcafee related and not Mcafee - outlook related.
But the original problem still exists.
I checked out the link also but this is to do with Mcafee locking files and unable to release them. couldnt find any mention of my problem.

McAfee AV interferes with Fileset addin.  So you enable one and disable the other.

by: sutclkPosted on 2007-06-21 at 03:59:46ID: 19331888

When you say "McAfee AV interferes with Fileset addin.  So you enable one and disable the other." do you mean enable 1 add-in and disable the other add-in. If so, I dont have an add-in called "McAfee Virus Scan." or anything else named mcafee in the "add-in manager". Just to make sure I unticked (disabled) every add-in, except for the interwoven extention add-in. But the problem still occurs

by: war1Posted on 2007-06-21 at 08:32:10ID: 19333989

What I am saying is to disable the Fileset addin, or disable McAfee AV.  Use another antivirus program.

LOL........unfortunetly, I work for a major banking center and cannot just start switching virus scanning software or turning off DMS functionality (as mush as I would like to) .
I'm awaiting contact back from Mcafee regarding this issue (sent them MERtool log), so I will post the results and resolution if ever I get one.

Many thanks for your help though War1

Any other suggestion would be appreciated though

McAfee Enterprise has lots of hooks and can slow your system or any of its applications.  If possible, go back to McAfee Enterprise 8.0, at least for one user, and test.

by: sutclkPosted on 2008-03-28 at 08:51:50ID: 21231485

Many thanks for your comment War1. DMS behaves very well when i go back to McAfee Enterprise 8.0. I tested the other day Outlook 2003 with McAfee Enterprise 8.5. and that works well too.
Havent got much faith in getting McAfee Enterprise 8.5 to work with Outlook 2002 & DMS.

by: war1Posted on 2008-03-28 at 09:16:37ID: 21231734

You may check with McAfee if Enterprise 8.5 is designed to work with Outlook 2002. It is an older email client.

We actually experienced the same problem listed above.  After months of working with Interwoven, and not really getting anywhere we upgraded the Operating system on the Storage server from Windows 2003 standard to Enterprise.  We had already maxed the server out to 12 GB or RAM but due to the operating system were not utilizing the full 12 GB.  Once we upgraded the operating system our problem seems to have gone away.  We are now utilizing the full 12 GB and everything seems to be much more responsive.

Hi All, we are experiencing very similar issues as those described. Essentially Outlook performance is extremely slow especially when accessing additionally connected mailboxes. The problem really came to light last year when everyone was upgraded to Office 2003.

I have had a call logged with MS PSS for a number of weeks now and they have been extremely helpful but even they are now running out of ideas. There are no configuration issues with the back-end Exchange mailbox servers however RPC latency is high and they have also observed higher than expected data throughput from some PC's. Their conclusion is that the issue is client related and likely to be a 3rd party add-in/plug-in.

We're running Outlook 2003, McAfee VirusScan 8.5i and Filesite 8.2 SP1 Patch3 with E-Mail Management (this is the Outlook add-in that I suspect is the culprit).

As this thread is from 2007 I was wondering if anyone had any useful updates/fixes/resolutions on this?

Many thanks.

by: sutclkPosted on 2009-01-29 at 06:38:31ID: 23497751

I never did get to the bottom of this. Mcafee have now released an update to thier client 8.7i. Which I will be testing soon. But I suspect this is an issue with Interwoven.

JJones312 may have a point though. Our backend DMS servers are still on Win2K...........

Anymore updates on this are very welcome

by: matthew_barclayPosted on 2009-01-29 at 06:49:27ID: 23497898

Thanks for the update.

We're just about to deploy 8.7i however like yourself I suspect the Interwoven plug-ins.

Unfortuntaely it would be a massive job for us to upgrade all of our backend DMS servers and removing the plug-ins is not an option!

I think I'm going to have to log a call with Interwoven.

by: sutclkPosted on 2009-01-29 at 07:04:20ID: 23498088

We have been discussing upgrading our DMS servers with our support people via Interwoven. 1 x 32bit Server & 1 x 64bit Server (SQL Database) I'll let you know how we get on and if we ever acheive a resolution .

I like all of you have tried to work with Interwoven.  We actually in total have been working on this problem for about a year.  We had several factors that came in to play at the same time which caused us to have a problem trying to figure out where the problem was coming from.  We moved our office from one building to another, we of course just did not move our networking equipment we actually bought all new equipment but kept the same servers, we upgraded to new PC's and upgraded the software including McAfee and Office.  We were running server 2003 standard with 4 GB of RAM.  We went as far to call Microsoft and open tickets with them and have them conference in with Interwoven.  Microsoft said everything on Exchange was fine it was Interwovens problem.  We then tried making a few users a NRTAdmin which bypasses security and it worked for a while but the problem came back.  Finally after numerous people had looked at our 2 servers, Interwoven basically said your just under powered and you need to upgrade to Enterprise.  So after fighting with this problem for close to a year we upgraded this past weekend (It did not go as smoothly as it was supposed to) but after 6 hours we were back up.  I had all of my people that kept telling me how slow everything was check it this week and its flying.  The server now has 12 GB or RAM and is sitting around 2 1/2 all of the time used.  Hopefully this will help some of you out with this very annoying and frustrating problem.  Also i don't want anyone to think i am bashing Interwoven either.  I believe that they tried their best to solve this problem.

Your very welcome, i feel your pain and anything i can do to help someone else not go through what we went through the last 12 months i will do.

by: matthew_barclayPosted on 2009-01-30 at 06:40:51ID: 23508588

Hi JJones, can I please ask one final question and this is really for the purposes of management.

You upgraded your backend DMS servers from W2K3 Std to Ent Edition installing 12GB RAM and this had a postive direct impact on the overall performance of Outlook. Is this an accurate statement?

Also can you tell what DMS servers were upgrades? I assume they were your Docs servers as SQL would have already been running Ent edition.

Many thanks.

by: JJones312Posted on 2009-01-30 at 06:47:05ID: 23508659

Yes adding the 12 GB or RAM was did have a positive direct impact on Overall Outlook performance.

Actually as far as the second question is concerned my SQL server and my docs server are the same server and it was only running 2003 standard.  With the upgrade to 2003 enterprise SQL (which you know automatically budgets half of your RAM for its process) had more than enough to run with virtually no slowdown.

by: matthew_barclayPosted on 2009-01-30 at 07:00:39ID: 23508838

Thank you.

by: jrebultanPosted on 2009-07-10 at 20:05:05ID: 24828897

Hi Sutclk,

We have similar issues and pretty much the same environment. I've found that excluding the following directories from the on-access scan:

c:\documents and settings\user\local settings\temp\netright\*.*

c:\nrtecho

c:\nrtprtbl

by: jrebultanPosted on 2009-07-10 at 20:11:29ID: 24828917

Also, if you're using the access protection, view the logs and you'll probably find outlook and winword are being blocked. I just disable the access protection.

Also if you're having trouble with the views when switching workspaces (icons don't show correctly), you have to delete the frmcache.dat.

what service pack for office are you running?
