Question

McAfee prevents emailing. How to make PERMANENT changes to McAfee settings??

Asked by: adesal

My .NET program cannot send emails. This is because McAfee antivirus has a list of programs that are permitted to email, and my program is not there. I adjust the list (VirusScan Consloe, Anti-virus Standard Protection, Prevent mass mailing worms...), and this helps. But the change lasts for several minutes only.

Here is the question: HOW CAN I MAKE PERMANENT CHANGE TO MCAFEE SETTINGS?

ciphron already posted a similar question ID: 22452459, and drcllamjg advised to look at Common Standard Protection and modify there a couple of rules that prevent modification of the VirusScan and Common management Agent files and settings. Unfortunately, this does not work for me because these changes are also temporary.

We have McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5. under Windows XP Professional.

Your settings are likely controlled by an ePO or ProtectionPilot agent (Common Management Agent.) What's happening is that you are modifying the settings, 5 minutes later the agent detects the change and changes the settings back. You will either need to disable the agent or modify the policy at the ePO or ProtectionPIlot level. To remove the agent, if it's in the default location run this command:

C:\Program Files\Network Associates\Common Framework\FrmInst /forceuninstall

Depending on how your network is managed, there may be a mechanism to force it to reinstall at next login or something, so this may be temporary for you as well.

To modify the setting at the ePO or ProtectionPilot level, you will need to go into the console, select your machine, go to the appropriate page, uncheck Inherit, and modify the settings. Don't forget to apply the settings before navigating away from that page or your settings will be lost!

Now right-click the V shield icon on the desktop and choose Update Now. If the icon is hidden you can force the change from the server level. Or wait 5-10 minutes and you should see the setting has changed on the client level. Good luck!

Thank you, og_sh0x, it did not work for me.
FrmInst /forceuninstall says "Can't start service McAfeeFramework Can't stop service McAfeeFramework".

I could not try your second advice "need to go into the console, select your machine, go to the appropriate page, uncheck Inherit, and modify the settings" because I need more info.: If you meanVirusScan console  I do not know how to select my machine there, what is the appropriate page etc. If you mean some other console, I do not know which one.

Are you on a network at your workplace? If yes, please ask your Network Admin to do the adjustment for you.

If you use a stand alone pc, do you have full admin rights for the pc?

by: adesalPosted on 2007-08-17 at 10:57:19ID: 19718923

Thank you, upul007, for your prompt response.

I am on a network, but the Network Admin is on call, and it is not that simple to get him here.
I do have admin rights on this PC.

I am sure I am not the first person trying to send an email with McAfee installed. Very strange (and not flattering to McAfee) that this becomes such a problem. Their free support said they were not trained enough.  I am not sure  if their paid support will resolve this, but I am sure they charge $299 per minute :-(

McAfee Console prevents traffic on the SMTP port 25. If you are using Netscape or Thunderbird, you will have to add those to port 25.

McAfee is what we have been using for a long time. So, I know the exact way of doing this.

Right click on the shield Icon in your tray. Go to Virus console. You will see ""Access Protection" in the list of menus. Right click on "Access Protection" and click properties. There you will see a list of ports McAfee Blocks. Highlight Port 25 and click on the edit box. On the very bottom, you will see a list of exceptions.

Edit these exeptions by putting in your mail client and server executable file names. Make sure you use a comma at the end of each edit.

Example:
For Thunderbird: Add Thunde~1.exe and Thunderbird.exe
For Netscape: Add Nestcape.exe

Another test you can do on McAfee 8.5 is to disable Port 25 monitoring.

Follow the steps above. Except this time, uncheck port 25 isntead of editting it.

I don't recommend keeping it unchecked. Mass Mailing worms are the reason McAfee blocks traffic on port 25.

The above edit applies to servers as well as clients.

ChiefIT, won't any such settings he makes be undone the next time the agent enforces policies? The way I understand it, the only way to make this change permanent is to disable the agent or to make the change at the server level. Adesal, your three options as I see it:

1. Get administrative rights to the machine and remove the agent. If this is not your network, doing this may not make your network admin happy at all.
2. Make the change at the server level using the ProtectionPilot or ePO console. You definitely will need help from your network administrator for this, unless you intend to break into the server room or wherever the console is located. You need a password to get into it.
3. Make the change every time you want to send mail, and send the mail quickly before the policy is enforced and your changes removed.

I'm sorry, I misread that you said you do have admin rights to the machine. I thought you said you don't. Try this to complete the agent removal:

Open the Virusscan console, go to Access protectionm, Uncheck the "Prevent McAfee Services from being stopped" checkbox. Run the FrmInst /forceuninstall immediately before the policies are enforced.

Thank you both, I appreciate your desire to help.

I do not see any ports mentioned in my Action Protection Properties.
I contacted our network admin, they promised to do it, but they did not (yet?). So I am waiting.

by: ChiefITPosted on 2007-08-22 at 21:11:51ID: 19751538

Right click on the shield in your system tray.
left click on Virus Console.
..The very top Icon that looks like a stop light says "access protection".
Left click on access protection and select properties.
...A new window will pop up and the very top selection says, "Prevent mass mailing worms" and will be on port 25.
doubleclick prevent mass mailing worms, port 25
A new window will pop up and you will see at the bottom ""excluded processes"". There is an editable line were you want to enter your mail client's executable filenames in there separated by a comma.

Example:
For Thunderbird: Add Thunde~1.exe and Thunderbird.exe
For Netscape: Add Nestcape.exe

Sounds like you used upul's suggestion by contacting your administrator.

Maybe Upul can tell you how to accept His/Her solution and take credit. You can also credit folks with an assist. I have never written a question before. So, I don't know how to do it. LOL.

I don't see any selected. To be honest, I have never asked a question. So, I don't know how to accept one. Maybe someone else in our group can provide the answer and take an assist or full credit.
