Virut is a buggy file infector that infects every .exe and .scr files, when an antivirus tries to clean the infected file the file gets corrupted so it won't work anymore.
You can try AVG's tool http://www.grisoft.com/doc
But virut has many buggy variants and scanners can't disinfect them properly so the exe gets corrupted or end up getting deleted.
It's a kinda "game over" thing, the infected pc users lost and the virus won.
The damaged system's recommended option is to reformat and reinstall, and you can only backup pictures and documents.
How to be protected from Virut?
Virut is spread via crack and keygen sites, so no security programs that can protect a system but the user itself.
Is it really worth it going to these sites?
Usually an antivirus can remove common viruses, it's only this specific "Virut" virus that disinfection is not successful because you can't clean the infected files and there are no backup files to replace those .exe and .scr files.
Some file-infectors infect the system by replacing legit .exes by itself but moves the original files intact to bak folders, which is handy because we can always replace the infected file with the original files from bak folders.
But with Virut, it's not the case, so a reformat is the way to overcome it.
Best of luck!
Thank you.
Reformat is the way to go unfortunately. Spent a lot of time with two variants of Virut. Even after AVG and symantec removal tool, manual clean up/removal on the HD from another computer, corrected policies in registry, sfc /scannow, fdisk, and a windows repair.... still get svchost errors and cmd crashes explorer...
Got it clean but can't fix the damage, so save yourself the time and format. I've seen reports of it coming back after format... so might want to do a fdisk /mbr and a full format.
VIRUS WILL INFECT EXE's ON A MEMORY STICK AND SPREAD INFECTION TO ANOTHER COMPUTER.
If you have used any executable form a USB stick on a Virut infected PC. Make sure you have autoplay off, and use the AVG tool to clean your stick. You can tell the tool what drive to scan from command prompt.

consider getting http://www.kaspersky.com/ it protects from nearly all viruses and is a great investment expecially if you are getting bothered by the virut virus
