Question

Unable to open hard drive after virus scan

Asked by: cpworks

I just did a full virus scan on my system and the virus Worm/Autoit.HL was detected and cleaned. However, after the scan I can no longer open my drives. When I try to open my hard drive I get the message "THE C:\ APPLICATION CANNOT BE RUN IN WIN32 MODE".

Please help.

I know this is not a flash drive but this may help as it creates a new autorun.inf in all drives and/or partitions.

Download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/Flash_Disinfector.exe

* Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
* The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile
phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
* Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
* Reboot your computer when done.

Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection.

Thanks, IndiGenus, for your response but I am having problems downloading the file from that site. I get a timeout error no matter how I try. Is there anywhere else I can get this file. I've tried a few searches and they all lead to the same link.
Thanks.

Interesting...? Downloads no problem for me. Do you have another PC you can try it on? I don't know of any other links to it either, I don't think it's mirrored any where.

Hmm.. No I don't have another system. I guess I'll have to download it from a friend's PC later. I was able to run HijackThis though. Here's the log - its a long listing.

Ahh yes, a couple of nasties in there.

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Double click on SDFix.exe. It should automatically extract a folder called SDFix to your system drive (usually C:\). Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.

Open the SDFix folder and double click on RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y and press Enter to begin the script.
It will start cleaning your PC and then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any key to restart the PC.
Your system will take longer than normal to restart as the fixtool will be removing files.
When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished.
Press any key to end the script and to load your desktop icons.

A text file should automatically open,
Please upload the log at EE-Stuff.com
Use the link below and login using your Experts-Exchange username and password.
http://www.ee-stuff.com
Click on "Expert Area" tab
type or paste the link to your Question
"Browse" your pc to the location of your SDFix log and click "Upload"
Copy the resulting "url" and post it back here.

Please also upload a fresh HijackThis log to the same location.

Looks like it may have been this "AVI" that you downloaded a couple of weeks ago:

D:\Funny UST Scandal.avi.exe
D:\smss.exe

Both of those files should be deleted. Both show as hidden so you will need to enable hidden files and folders to see them. Make sure you DO NOT delete the valid smss.exe located here: D:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe

HijackThis also shows one that may be right in the Windows folder: D:\WINDOWS\smss.exe - delete from here if found.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Runonce] D:\WINDOWS\smss.exe - This entry should go away once you reboot. SDFix also deleted autorun.inf. Can you see your hard drive now?

No. It's still the same message although its like both of the files - smss.exe and Funny UST Scandal.avi.exe - have been deleted. I disabled System restore, sestarted in safe mode then ran SDFix again. HijackThis is still showing O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Runonce] D:\WINDOWS\smss.exe

Have you tried fixing the 04 with HJT, then rebooting to see if it's still there? If not try that.

We can also try combofix here.

Download and Run ComboFix (by sUBs)

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

Disable your Anti-virus and any real-time Anti-spyware monitors that are running.
Then double click Combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log for you. Upload that log in your next reply with a new HijackThis log.
Please upload the log at EE-Stuff.com
Use the link below and login using your Experts-Exchange username and password.
http://www.ee-stuff.com
Click on "Expert Area" tab
Type or paste the link to your Question
"Browse" your pc to the location of your Hijackthis log and click "Upload"
Copy the resulting "url" and post it back here.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.
Note 2: Remember to re-enable your Anti-virus and Anti-spyware.

NOTE: If you have issues connecting to your network or internet after running combofix you can either simply reboot, or do the following:
* Going to Control Panel > Network Connections.
* Right click on their Network icons & select "Repair"
or
Alternately, if the Network icon appears in the notification area in the lower right corner of Desktop, right-click it, and then click Repair from the shortcut menu.

Although I had to try several options as directed b4 I arrived at the solution, it did solve my problem and saved me from reformatting my hard drive - which is how I usually handle problems that seem impossible to solve. Thanks.
