Question

Unable to boot VISTA in both normal or safe mode after virus notification!

Asked by: misty2grind

I have been using my fully loaded new Dell XPS 1330 with no problems for the last months. It has Windows Vista Ultimate and is loaded with 200gigs of personal files and applications i spent 2 days installing from my old comp.

Today i was checking my email and my PC chilling Virus Notification popped-up saying it had caught a virus and a trojan. It asked me if i wanted to delete. i said yes. I received the message "virus removed successfully" along with "IE error" then "windows explorer error" followed by my computer shutting down automatically. when i tried to re-start, it loads the windows logo then goes blank screen. When I try in safe mode, it goes to the logo...then the windows vista screen at which point it says "loading, please wait"...then it re-boots automatically and boots in normal which goes back to the blank screen.!

Is there anything I can do from DOS!!!! Remove the virus??? Why isn't "boot from last known good configuration showing up?" ...why is safe mode not working???? HELP!!! I can't believe my bad luck!!!! Please tell me there is some way around this.

Maybe it was a false positive and your scanner has removed an important windows component?
You could write that component back if you only could say which one it was. Do you remember?
Can you access the scanner's log from DOS?
If you knew where the log is kept, you could take a bootdisk with ntfs support: avira ntfs4dos.

Punky, how should he do that? Your howto tells to start the repair installation from within a running windows. Furthermore, MS changed the way the repair installation works, it's no longer possible to start it from the setup-CD - too bad.

by: PUNKYPosted on 2008-01-06 at 10:57:39ID: 20595086

The purpose is to get back normal windows (not blank screen as questioner is experiencing now). It is booting from DVD: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/91467-startup-repair.html

And when able-to get in normal windows, then you can view logs, or further repair if needed.

by: McKnifePosted on 2008-01-06 at 11:03:57ID: 20595125

You haven't got my point. He cannot perform a repair install according to your manual.

by: McKnifePosted on 2008-01-06 at 11:05:11ID: 20595132

The startup repair is something different. I agree, he should at least try that one.

I copied and pasted here few:

Here's How:
1. Insert your Vista installation DVD and then restart your computer.
NOTE: You will be booting from the Vista DVD, so make sure that you set the BIOS to have the CD/DVD listed first to boot from.
2. If prompted, press any key to start Vista from the installation DVD. (See screenshot below)

My Dell came with Vista Home Premium, which I then upgraded to Vista Ultimate. I have both Cd's. when I try your recommendation with either CD , i get the same results: I get to the recovery menu, and the start-up diagnostic doesn't find any problems. When i try system restore...its says that my system restore is malfunctioning. The only thing I can do from this menu is go into my command prompt. Any ideas from here?

by: PUNKYPosted on 2008-01-06 at 11:40:29ID: 20595264

Try system restore from this command:

C:\Windows\System32\rstrui.exe

by: misty2grindPosted on 2008-01-06 at 11:53:34ID: 20595302

I get the same error:

"sytem restore does not appear to be functioning correctly on this system"..."incompatible version of the serializing package (0x80070724)"

HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? I am using the original CD. Is there a way to do a virus check from dos?

are any of you familiar with the C:/BCDEDIT boot options in DOS for windows vista? Safe mode seems to load until the "please wait" screen and then restart my computer after about 30 seconds. There is a boot "timeout" setting as one of the BCDEDIT options... not sure how access it or if it has anything to do with this, Maybe the computer is restarting before VISTA safe mode has a chance to load?

Where do I get the correct cd image of knoppicillin? can you send me a link?

Ooops, as far as I can see, Knoppicillin is only available for download without the scanners or in old versions. Better take http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ - has 3 Scanners

Perhaps you should consider removing the HD from the unit and save your data before you try any virus cleaning. Any sort of activity that writes to the HD may well corrupt the file system and then you're in for an expensive experience. Possibly, you can use Knoppix to boot the computer, and copy off any important data over the LAN (if applicable) or to a USB drive, thus avoiding mechanical work on the laptop.

McKnife, which tool under that link that your provided should i download (from another laptop of course)...there are tons of tools on that site. Which one were you thinking? Will it work with Vista?

by: misty2grindPosted on 2008-01-06 at 15:53:49ID: 20596249

Okay, i'm in the process of downloading the ultimate Boot Cd .iso file which i will then burn onto a cd. once i reboot with the cd, which tools should i run on it?

by: McKnifePosted on 2008-01-06 at 15:56:32ID: 20596266

Which tools? The virusscanners maybe? ;)
F-Prot Antivirus for DOS 3.16f For personal use only. Virus definition: 4 May 2007.
McAfee Antivirus Scanner
Maybe they are updatabke somehow.

But - like in my first posting - I would prefer another way.

by: misty2grindPosted on 2008-01-07 at 09:48:45ID: 20601305

OK, Problem solved.

Solution was rather rogue:

As I noted before I was not getting the boot option to "use last known good configuration". So at one point while it was doing the false boot for the 200th time, I turned off the computer in frustration mid-boot.

The next time I tired to load it, the missing boot option appeared! So I tried it. Vista loaded flawlessly and I immediately ran the virus scanner which picked up the Petrats.S-O trojan virus.

Now the only problem I have is the following annoying but harmless desktop error notice when windows loads:

"Could not load or run 'C:\Windows\system32\hggfc.exe' specified in the registry.  Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry."

Any suggestions?

by: McKnifePosted on 2008-01-07 at 10:11:44ID: 20601501

That is a startup entry created by the virus - delete it. You can use msconfig to do so (section startup).
Please be aware that you cannot be sure that you are still infected just because your scanner deleted *one* instance of something. So be careful. Best to retgain security is to reinstall and get your data back from a backup.

by: misty2grindPosted on 2008-01-08 at 21:31:46ID: 20615763

The file does not appear in the "startup" section of msconfig...any other ideas?

by: misty2grindPosted on 2008-01-09 at 11:10:45ID: 20621137

Looks like you were right. Today Vista loaded but I can't move, minimize or maximize any of my applications. This happens every time I re-start. My virus scanner is not picking up any viruses though and I still get that message upon launching VISTA : Could not load or run 'C:\Windows\system32\hggfc.exe' specified in the registry.

Do any of these virus programs actually work?

My windows task bar has started to disappear upon trying to open Windows Explorer! I feel as though my computer has been invaded by a nasty trojan. What do I do?

by: McKnifePosted on 2008-01-09 at 14:36:05ID: 20623216

You have to reinstall.
If you don't have a backup of your data, you should take your harddrive to a second computer and install it as a slave drive to backup data. If you don't have access to certain files, read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421. As long as you don't execute anything on that drive, there is no risk of an infection.
