Question

Trend CSM services missing on server and PC

Asked by: djMundy

I have a client running SBS 2003 and Trend Micro CSM for SMD. Three of the Trend services are missing (not even showing in services.msc), namely these:

Trend Micro Client/Server Security Agent Listener
Trend Micro Client/Server Security Agent Personal Firewall
Trend Micro Client/Server Security Agent RealTime Scan

These other services ARE still showing:

Trend Micro Messaging Security Agent Master Service
Trend Micro Messaging Security Agent Remote Configuration Server
Trend Micro Messaging Security Agent System Watcher
Trend Micro Security Server Master Service
Trend Micro Worry-Free Remote Manager Agent

Background:

Recently we had problems and had to disable the Trend services on the server. This was because of an issue where all PCs would lock up at 3:00pm every day, and disabling the services fixed it. This was due to a bug in Trend that is supposedly fixed in the new patch (http://www.trendmicro.com/download/au/product.asp?productid=40).

When I enabled the services again on the server I notice that the Trend icon is missing from the system tray. I went into services, expecting to find them stopped, but instead find that the three services mentioned above are completely missing.

Thanks,
Daniel

Obvious I know, but reboot.    If they are not showing, and you had the client installed on the server, then you will need to reinstall it.

Does the client show in Add/remove programs still?

Thanks top_rung, I'll try rebooting it tonight and reinstall Trend if that doesn't fix it.

I was going to do this if no other solution was available, as I'm guessing that reinstalling Trend on the server will stop the relationship between clients and server - forcing me to reinstall Trend on all clients too? Am I correct in assuming this?

I'll let you know tomorrow how I went.

The services that are missing are the Client services.  If the Trend/Micro Client/Server Security agent is showing up in your Add/Remove programs, then it has been uninstalled.  Either by another admin, or in a worse case, something malicious.

you could just reinstall the agent. You don't need to mess with all the clients.  If you upgrade the Server side to the latest version (3.6 I believe), the clients should automatically update their Engine/patterns Automatically.  You can Manually do it throught the server's dashboard.

I meant to say IS NOT showing up in your Add/Remove Programs.. Sorry about that.

by: djMundyPosted on 2008-01-07 at 18:39:56ID: 20605519

The only programs showing in Add/Remove were:

Trend Micro End User Quarantine
Trend Micro Messaging Security Agent
Trend Micro Security Server for SMB

I re-ran the setup.exe hoping for an option to install only the agent, but it started an upgrade process. I let the process complete, which it did successfully, but the services are still missing.

I ran the client installation from https://sbs:4343 - this completed successfully and now the services are all showing up.

I'm not sure whether this was done by a malicious program, so will be running a full scan on this server straight away!

Thanks heaps for your help,
Daniel

Yeah, and question any and all other Admins to see if it was done by them. If you have auditing for objects acccess turned on, it might show you something as well.

Good luck.
