Windows firewall enabled?  Is so, disable.

by: eazy3333Posted on 2008-02-22 at 13:00:22ID: 20961382

no, but the firewall doesn't have anything to do with it. It's not using the network the program is trying to create a registry key and fails with an access denied error

I'm really having a unique problem here with this box. I'm trying to install sp2 now and i get the same error on the same registry key. I think it has a rootkit or something.

service pack 2 setup could not backup registry value HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run,\'tabletwizard\'. 5: access is denied

Have you tried DjLizard's Dial-a-Fix? It will find and attempt to restore restrictions.

I can take a look at running dial-a-fix on the computer. I cannot view any of the registry values under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run or RunOnce, it just shows an empty list.

If I go to msconfig it shows the list just fine, or if i use another program other than the windows registry editor i can see the values just fine. If I try to create any value under run or runonce it says : cannot create value. error writing to the registry. The only reason I'm working on this and haven't just formatted the drive  is because it seams like the malware I'm dealing with lately is becoming increasingly more intelligent and strange problems like this are occurring.

I've done countless hours of searching for people with the same problem, only no one has a solution.

Dial-a-Fix didn't find any policies, I checked all boxes and let it run through, still it's the same problem, If I knew what could be blocking me from writing to this key or viewing this key. Rootkit revealer didn't turn up anything useful

Here's the solution I cannot believe is so simple and all the searching I did no one was able to provide an answer to people having the same problem as me: " right click on the registry key > change permissions" The malware removed all permission to that registry key

Worked great for AVG 8.0

by: artfuller365Posted on 2008-11-16 at 10:26:08ID: 22971453

I found the same problem trying to install AVG 8 Free after the removal of a series of viruses and trojans.
I installed Avast successfully, but I will return to this client and install AVG now that I know the solution.

Thank you!
