Question

how to get rid of this?

I have a user that keeps getting this Centrallog.exe error and I know it is a virus. I have run this laptop in safe mode and ran the scan from Trendmicro house call that is supposed to find all. I cannot seem to get rid of this. I also ran spybot and it still shows up. I go to google and it only gives me another company that says they have software to remove it. Does or has anyone ever ran across this and how can I delete it for good?

Usually viruses can't be removed because they are running when you try to delete them.  Try to boot into safe mode and run a virus scan.  If you want to run an online one, boot into safe mode with networking support and do a scan.  This will help a lot of the time.

If it still won't remove, take out the hard drive and put it in a USB enclosure.  Plug it into another machine and scan the drive as a secondary drive.  That should almost definitely remove it since nothing on that drive will be running.

Not wishing to start a flame war but Trend Micro is not the most robust AV product in my opinion.

If you have a budget buy a well regarded commercial AV product.  I would personally recommend NOD32 by ESET (http://www.eset.com/)

If you have no budget you could consider using one of the free AV products on the market but most of them have licenses that exclude commerical use.  For non-commerical use I would personally recommend AVAST (http://www.avast.com/)

I have run this laptop in safe mode and it still shows up. Taking the hard drive out and changing is not so easy to do here as equipment is not at a surplus. Is there another way or has anyone else ever seen this?

how do you know its a virus?  

i would manually remove it-search for the .exe and delete it.  

you could also download hijackthis and run it.  if you can't figure out how to use it, just run it and post your log here.

Are you running PointSec or the Checkpoint Firewall client?

I'm sure I've seen Centrallog.exe in the PointSec client......

that's why i said how do you know its a virus-i researched it and it didn't come up as anything malevalent.

Did you run the spybot search and destroy application in safe mode and its updated....?
ALso try with superantispyware software...http://www.superantispyware.com/

Yeah, send us your HijackThis (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/hijackthis.php) log after you scan with SUPERAntiSpyware.

Turns out this is a pointsec instance. I talked with the admin of pointsec and he says this is because of pointsec and he will add this to his list of fixing support. Thanks for the help. I saw where many palces on google call this a virus, but it is not and is pointsec related. Thanks for the help and this is excellent and I am sure pointsec from what I have seen will cause me more grief.
