Question

previous application launch failed

Asked by: KeThienNguyen

We are running Win2003 server and Kaspersky ver 6. The error window pops up (please check enclosed) saying "previous application launch failed".  It is someting with Kaspersky thought. I then:
- uninstalled Kaspersky.
- removed anything to do with Kas, Kaspersky in registry.
- deleted Kaspersky folders under C:\program files\
- Run CCleaner
Finally we installed Kaspersky again, the error windows is still poping up from the start.
However I would be able to update the database , run Full scan but it dropped out, the task could not finish,  Nothing wrong in msconfig.  Any suggestion is very much appreciated.

Please make sure you are running the latest build of kaspersky , also you may want to consult the actual application log, Kaspersky registers a new log category  in the event viewer with its name , look for related errors there as well as in the even tviewer>system & applications tabs.

Since what you received this error? An update, a new software, ...?

Have you try to download the latest version on the kaspersky website and update your Windows Server 2003 with all the newest update?

Hi Admin3k and SecureIP.
Event viewer is fine. The lastest version of kaspersky is used.
Don't know when Kaspersky started creating errors.
Removed Kas related key in registry and reinstalled Kas again but still have no luck.
I am sending logfiles in Zip format, hope that will solve the problems with your help.
Regards

have you send this log to kas support departement? and what's about your windows update?

by: KeThienNguyenPosted on 2008-12-23 at 15:47:31ID: 23237760

Hi SecureIP
Yes I have sent the log files to Kas as well but hear nothing from them yet. I may take at least 24hrs.
Windows is up to date. I am sure it is something with Kas because the error "Previous application launch failed" pops up when kas could not finish the scanning task . Should I remove Kas again and go back to the older Kas version ???? Good Try eh ? Any suggestion please.

As advised by secureIP , have you checked if your server is missing any neccessary or related patches ?

also is there any pattern that you can see when the scan task hangs or fails ?

any particular directory ,etc.. ?

also this could always be a bug in the software, which should be solved in the next build, but the thing is we are using the same version (6.0.3.837) on hundreds of  W2k3 servers at work here without any issues .

finally , there are some special considerations when deploying an antivirus product on servers, depending on the server role.

for example in exchange you have to exclude the mail stores , Active Directory DB on DCs, Physical Database files on DB servers, IIS Cache folders on IIS servers ,Page File ,Clustered servers, etc..

not following these steps can cause problems to your software environment which can include the Antivirus program & server applciations.

Microsoft has released dozens of KB articles with this information , all you need is to google them with terms like" Microsoft best practise Antivirus SQL server"  ,etc..

hope this helps

Hi there
- Windows is fully updated
-No crashing involved.
-Windows starts normally, showing no errors
- Run Kas full scan mode as required by Kas, however Kas can not finish the task and the log files created together with *.dmp files in binary format (big files)
- The server is only used for a few teaching webpages, using AD but only 3 accounts, using WSUS for 50 workstations, no sharing, no firewall, nothing else but only Kas .
- Look at therror logfile, it is showing error Unhandled exception 0xc0000005 and also 0xc0000409, I am still doing a bit of research on this but found nothing related to Kas at the moment.
It is very much appreciated if you could advise on this matter, BTW:/ Merry Christmas to you guys, don't work to hard, the world won't collapse like 9/11 again. Bewdy mate .(Please check enclosed)

I have 2 questions for you :) first, why do you have Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 on your server? second question is: why you have 2 times Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 for Windows Servers in your installed software?

thx for your answer :)

by: KeThienNguyenPosted on 2008-12-24 at 19:13:52ID: 23242540

I never realized Kas installed twice on the server, I MUST have look at it early next week. If it is the case then the error message does make sense to me. Hope this case will be closed asap.

I don't have good reasons to run MS Office on the server, will remove it .
Btw:/ Thanks for your quick and efficient response. I do appreciate your help guys.
Merry Christmas
Bewdy mate.

Hi there
Still waiting the feedback from Kaspersky but I can't wait any longer :-).
As I mentioned to you that our server is just for printers and some teaching webpages so I decided to reformat and reinstalled the fresh system on another hard driver. It is up and running well now.
However I always appreciate your advise and time. See you till next time. Case closed.
Happy New Year
