I can't seem to find any way to get rid of this thing for him. He called Staples, and they told him there is no way for him to get rid of it, that he must bring it in so they can run a special program not available to the public to get rid of it. Start your machine in safe mode(Admin account)
First check for any unique named files in the system32 folder.(Sort By Date)
If you have any files like special char's or symbols, delete it. make sure that the files are created after you have the problem.
If you cannot check in process tab, you can see some process which are related to your usual list.
Kill it and then delete those system32 files.
Then reboot the machine in normal mode.
NOTE : I DONT THINK YOU NEED ANY SPECIAL TOOL TO REMOVE IT, YOU NEED HELPING HANDS, PATIENCE AND INTEREST.

I was an Engineer for Symantec Home Products(Norton), and i still use this page above if i have problems.... the best scan engine i have ever seen.
basic cleanup steps for spyware/virus possibilities are:
My usual routine for a system that is infected with viruses and/or spyware.
Go into Add/Remove programs, and remove all unwanted entries, and toolbars
Go into MSConfig> startup tab, remove all unwanted and suspicious entries
Download Adaware SE and the latest updates from: www.lavasoft.com
Download Spybot S&D and the latest updates from: http://www.safer-networkin
Download Hijackthis from: http://hijackthis.de
Download ccleaner from: www.ccleaner.com
After all of these are downloaded, turn off restore feature.
Reboot into safe mode.
Install Adaware, and update manually. Run it and remove all found entries.
Install Spybot, and update manually. Run it and do the same.
Run Hijackthis and if you are familiar with the entries, remove any unwanted entries. If not save the log file for later evaluation.
Install CCleaner and run that.
Reboot system into regular windows,
Run Hijack this again. There are things it won't pick up in safe mode.
if you need hijackthis evaluation, return to http://hijackthis.de and use their site for log evaluation.
Now log onto http://security.symantec.c
If you run into anything you can't get rid of or need help with any of these, just post here.
I took pieces of your recommendations to get rid of the malware/virus. First, I had my brother go to a restore point prior to the infection, then download and run malwarebytes and superantispyware. He then restored to current time, and after bootup the machine was clean of nasty pop-ups, but the desktop was half blue and half white. I had him restore the desktop by r-clicking on the destop and changing the properties/settings.
Some of his geeky friends told him this morning that because he downloaded free software (malwarebytes and superantispyware) that in about a week he would be teeming with viruses and worse off than ever. Is there any truth to this? Thanks in advance.

No, not correct. Both of those programs are legit. and very good at removing infections. Glad you got it sorted out.

If not run and post a HijackThis log.

Click on "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. Post the text from the log file. Do not have HJT fix anything at this point.
Please do not post the log into the comment window. Use "Attach File" under the comment window to post the log.
