Browse All TopicsI had a misadventure with some viruses from a bittorrent websit. Since then when I try to get my e-mail (on gmail.com) with either Chrome or Internet Explorer I get a permanent "redirecting" or "connecting" tab but I cannot get through. When I use Safari, however, the connection works fine. I have reset my IP addresses without fixing this problem.

I have been through the long thread cited by itkamarai - there appear to be many possible causes. Some work for a time and then stop. Here is my experience so far:
Date and time stamp made no difference.
Firefox, newly downloaded and installed immediately suffered the redirect problem and I haven't been able to use it.
Safari seems to run and is immune. I immediately get to gmail without difficulty.
With IE8, I am able to clean out the cache and all retained cookies, but no matter, I still get this trouble.
One suggestion was to modify the URL, changing "false" to "true". That works immediately, but the fix doesn't work for long.
I have modified my Roboform settings to be sure the URL is the simplest connection to the mail.google.com encrypted site, but no benefit.
I have AVG running as spyware/virus checker and have screened through twice, without showing any running programs.
I plan to download another spyware and virus checker, or maybe install Norton. Beyond that, I may have to just re-install Windows (I'll use 7), though I did plan to buy a new system in a couple of months.
In the end, what it took was malwarebyte's anti-malware + SuperAntiSpyware in addition to both AVG and McAfee antispyware programs. I don't know why the $70 McAfee program alone wasn't enough, but I had to run the first two (free) programs as well to purge the malware. I am an experienced user, but didn't realize that the routine programs like Norton and McAfee often aren't enough, even though they download new data daily.
