Before you do anything else, back up any file you care about. If mebroot detects software trying to remove it, it will destroy the drive.

Download the Kaspersky Live CD from here:

ftp://ftp.downloads1.kaspersky-labs.com/devbuilds/RescueDisk/

Burn the ISO as an image on a disk and then boot from this CD. Run the scanner and don't forget to scan the 'Disk Boot Sectors' in the list of drives to scan. That should get rid of Mebroot. Let me know, how it went.

You might get some messages about obsolete databases - either ignore the message or connect the computer to an ethernet connection allowing Kaspersky CD to download the latest definitions.

It appears to me that this virus infects only the master boot record and hides in the system restore directory which is usually known "  System Volume Information " ...

You need first to delete all the restore points in system restore .. this will probably be difficult while windows is working, so you might need to restart to safe mode with command prompt to manually delete the whole directory or use recovery console.

I suggest that you delete the whole folder using RD /s command to do so including the recycle directory as well, after you do so you need to fix the master boot record and using the Kasper live CD to scan your PC from infection or use your current installed protection to do so.

Hope this helps.

Sorry for my late reply. I've been away from EE for a bit. When you load the Kaspersky Boot CD, you get options to either start the Rescue Disk or to configure boot options. That is when you need to check to make sure that the following options are not enabled:

addresses.nodmraid
kernels.nosata

That should help with the SATA drives. Try that and let me know, how it goes.

no options to configure boot options. Either enter for rescue disk or f1 for help. When i click enter it go through a whole lot of commands and then says cant find boot device followed by a shell command thingy ? any ideas ?

You can create the same rescue disk but on a USB flash disk if you have one, you just need to change the boot sequence order from your BIOS to choose the USB Flash disk.

Start the Kaspersky boot CD again and as soon as it starts, you will see the boot prompt

boot:

Type 'dosata' (without the quotes of course) and then press enter. You will see an error message saying that Kernel isn't loaded yet. Then press enter again and you will see all the SATA drivers for different motherboards loading in front of you. Then it should work out. Try that and let me know, how it goes.

put cd in, it says click enter to boot and in the top corner it says f1 for help. I enter dosata and then enter it gives me another prompt to enter to boot, do that then theres lots of text scrolling and near the end it says no bootable media found. it then ends on a root block device command ? help help help, so complicated !

Have you tried the USB bootable version? it works for me.

by: warturtlePosted on 2009-08-20 at 13:34:04ID: 25146865

Try the USB bootable version as suggested by moh10ly first.

I will try to find more information on the topic. The Kaspersky rescue disk is basically a Gentoo linux distribution that should have SATA support by default. Can you also have a look within the BIOS to see if you can find any SATA related stuff? If you have SATA native support enabled, can you disable it and try then?

If your current operating system is Vista, you must run a file as an administrator.
File name :
makeboot.bat

After all the files have been copied to your Flash and you are prompted to enter to make the flash a bootable device.
You should then browse to your flash through My computer, locate the file makeboot.bat on your flash, right click and select run as an administrator.

You can try then..!
