Question

I have a computer infected with an undetermined amout of trojans.

Asked by: SBSISSP

I have installed Webroot Spysweeper, Malwarebytes Anti malware, Spy Hunter, Symantec anti-virus. They have all detected numerous types of infections but it appears there is one or several remaining infections which none of the applications have been able to remove. I did run all of them in "SAFE-MODE" and still no luck. I just installed the Microsoft Malicious Software removal tool for August and it is running in "SAFE-MODE".

Both Automatic Updates and BITS services will not start.

I am including a HIJACKTHIS log.

MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware and ComboFix are supposed to be run in normal mode unless the PC doesn't boot in normal mode.

Please download ComboFix from: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix . Read the instructions carefully, disable all existing real-time security programs before running it as they may interfere with ComboFix.  Let ComboFix finish and create a log. Then you can re-enable the computer security programs again and do a quick scan with MalwareBytes. Send us the ComboFix and MalwareBytes logs for inspection.

Hope it helps.

Your HijackThis log shows Braviax, that is a malware and ComboFix should help with its removal.

Thanks for responding. Unfortunately, the Microsoft Malicious software removal tool discovered two infections which it reported partial removal was successful. Once I rebooted the computer, it went into the "BLUE-SCREEN OF DEATH" and now I am running Windows repair tool on the drive to regain access to the OS. Once it completes I will test to see if there any lingering infections. If so, I will follow your recommendation.

Please use hijackthis again to fix the following Items...

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [braviax] (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [braviax] (User 'Default user')
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: cru629.dat

Restart your computer and then use Trend micro to online scan your computer.

I also recommend that you download combofix and use it, when your done post the log file here for experts to analyse.

In addition... fix these as well, these are trojan entries....
04 - HKLM\..\Run: [Regedit32] C:\WINDOWS\system32\regedit.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mset] C:\WINDOWS\system32\mset.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [mset] C:\Documents and Settings\mmontenegro\mset.exe

And these files need to be deleted as well but combofix or MalwareBytes should take care of it.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\regedit.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mset.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\mmontenegro\mset.exe

Since braviax is present you would need to rename Combofix before saving to your desktop.
Show us the Combofix log please.

Also check to make sure that (BITS) path to executable is correct.
Start > Run > type in:

services.msc

Highlight on "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" rightclick and click on properties and check to make sure that "Path to excutable" points to --> C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k
making sure that it's S on System32 and not "F" for Fystem32.

Let us know if it is not correct and we'll post the steps on how to correct it.

Thank you all for responding but regrettably after using my only Windows XP SPK3 CD to copy over the existing files of Windows. An error message appeared 39 minutes into completing the installation that an error had occurred on the CD with a file. Since I don't have a XP SPK3 CD, I have decided to reinstall XP again but SPK2. Once again thank you for your input.

Would say that a rebuild is your best option here.

Good luck.

As I stated in my previous post I was going to rebuild the computer from scratch. Again, thank you all for your help.
