Question

Considering Symantec Endpoint Protection

Asked by: OnsiteSupport

One of my new vendors is insisting on Symantec Endpoint Protection for an office of approx 50 users.  I have seen some really scathing comments about SEP and am looking for some of your experiences.

I am currently on SAV version 10 am not too impressed with the resources taken up at the client side.

Thank you for your opinions.

We are working with ESET NOD32 (business edition). I love it. It's accurate, fast, much cheaper, light weight (doesn't take much resources), I would recommend one of the several ESET business editions.

I have clients with SAV 10 running and no client side resource issues. Check if some daily scan is running and doesn't need to, or can run at an off-hour. I have clients with Client Security 3.x running unmanaged with no resource issues. This is the counterpart of SAV 10.

I have cleints with SEP running unmanaged (including my own Vista laptop). It works well and is light on resources.

What I have not done and need to do soon is upgrade the SAV managed clients to SEP. I have talked to specialists who will do this upgrade and they do not foresee big issues.

Would definitely agree with rseabird , My comments would exactly be the same for eset ;

You can use ESET remote administrator to push the install to all of your clients at once and manage the updates centrally as well

Its light weight, gets the job done - very good support (rarely required) :-)

I've been using SEP11 for around 18months now.

As with any product that goes through a major re-write as SAV has done to get to SEP will have problems.  The newest release has addressed the issues that were found in previous point releases.  As for the footprint on the client, SEP11 is noticably better.

Symantec is a known product to you which is a plus.  If you look at the competetion, McAfee has had issues recently with false positives etc.

Unless you are going through a desktop refresh, why replace SAV 10?

Jake-
I've heard that SEP is a good upgrade from SAV...sounds like you disagree?

by: jakethecatukPosted on 2009-10-01 at 07:35:01ID: 25469088

On the contrary, I have used Symantec products for getting for 20 years and I feel that their AV product offering in the Enterprise Arena cannot be beaten.

I would gladly recommend the upgrade to SEP - I was merely posing the question as to why you were considering the upgrade?
