Question

Total Security virus infection and System Restore

Asked by: thadley

My laptop, running XP, SP2, got infected with the Total Security virus.  It disabled everything except Internet Explorer, which it wanted me to use to buy some program to clean my computer.  I was finally able to stop it with SuperAntiSpyware.  Ive cleaned most of it with MalwareBytes and my computer is working mostly normally.  However, when I run a McAfee full scan it says McAfee encountered a problem and needs to close.  I can run a quick scan and then do a full scan.  But a full scan at first always gets that error.  The automatic weekly scan doesn't work either.

Also, I tried to do a System Restore to the day before the infection, but it doesnt work.  I get to the Confirmation page on System Restore, and the Next button doesnt do anything.  The Cancel and Back button work.  But the next button does nothing.  So. I can't restore.

What can I do to fix the System Restore?  And, do I need to re-install Mcafee?  Thanks for the help.

and what errors do you have in the eventlog?

i always say that if it was a virus in a workstation then it is better and quicker to reinstall the system.

A lot of infection can messed up with the system restore sometimes where users need to reinstall it.
First, make sure that the system is really clean by running other scanners like Combofix, Kaspersky's online scanner etc.

Can you show us the MalwareBytes log please?

Please download ComboFix by sUBs:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log and attach it in your next reply by pasting it in the "Code Snippet" or "Attach File" window.
Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

If needed, here's the Combofix tutorial which includes the installation of the Recovery Console:

Combo Fix did it.  It fixed McAfee and System restore.  It had to download the System Restore console from Microsoft.  Now, it works.

I'm attaching the ComboFix log for future reference.

Glad to know it's resolved.

It might be a good idea to run Combofix again. It deleted some bad files but the log also says to run it again as it was aborted somehow.
