Question

Panda Anti-virus found: W32/Xor-encoded.A virus," but not disinfectable". So how to dis-infect?

Asked by: jamesg1940

How do I dis-infect the W32/Xor-encoded.A virus? This is a low level malware & my PC runs OK.
Panda Anti-virus 2010 is unable to dis-infect this malware.
I can't find this .exe malware in the Registry, nor in a search of my drives, other than the text report created by Panda.

For malware infections, scan with either MalwarBytes Anti-Malware (www.malwarebytes.org) or SuperAntiSpyware (www.superantispyware.com) as a start. Report back with findings post scan.

Hi jamesg1940,

Run a temporary file remover...CCleaner is a good one and it's free.
http://www.ccleaner.com/

Download Combofix by sUBs.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Before running Combofix, temporary disable any firewall(s) shield(s) ect...to prevent any conflicts with Combofix. After Combofix is done scanning, it will create a log, for futher instructions, save and paste the results by Attach File, or by Code Snippet so other experts can take a look at it. Once after the log looks clean, you may enable your firewall(s) shield(s) ect. Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet. Your Internet connection will be automatically restored just before Combofix completes its scan. If Combofix runs into problems, your Internet connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

You'll might need to rename the file before saving to your desktop so it will not be blocked.

Please note: Don't run Combofix in Safe Mode.

Thank u for your advice. I installed & ran those two Programs. They both did not find that "virus/malware",
I posted in my question.
Not sure why Panda is identifying such. I do admit that I may have installed a malware download.
I usually am not so trusting.  PC also runs SpywareBalster. I may have allowed Anti-Virus to cease while
installing a chosen Program. Guess that is old tech. now, as I suppose it is correct to keep anit-virus Programs enabled & running, as not an "open Program" that is advised to close for an install.Correct?

Therefore, seems like the notice via Panda may not be valid.
I'll run that scan again & report before awarding the points to you.
Jim

Opps! Sorry,
I should've checked the incoming comments, re. second advice posting.
My recent reply was directed to "Warturtle".
I may not go forward with the  suggestions of "JeremySBrown" as I suppose that would be over
applying the search Programs for the supposed "virus".
I'll await further comments to close this question.
Jim

JeremySBrown:
I ran CCleaner & did not find any reference to W32/Xor.
I did not install "Combofix" as I do not want to add another Program of this type.

So, I have not found a reference to this issue in other than Panda.

So, I'll wait awhile to see if I get another "bite" on this question & a solution
to why Panda keeps identifying this malware.

Thank you both,
Jim

You could try this online scanner to see if it detects anything relavent to what Panda is detecting:
Nod32 online scan http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/

It might be a false positive. Try uploading that file on www.virustotal.com and see how many virus scanners flag it as infected. If it turns out that its a false positive, then you can add it to exclusions.

by: jamesg1940Posted on 2009-10-09 at 08:41:55ID: 25536110

To "optoma": I ran the ESET scanner & it found "no threats".

Therefore,
to "warturtle": seems like a "false positive". But I have not been able to find that file, or I would've tried to delete/remove it in the Registry. I "poked around" the Reg. but am not that familiar with editing/finding. I have done lot's of "searches" on the PC, via Windows Explorer., with no reference other than the .txt Reports I saved from the Panda scans.

So how do I find the "files" re. this supposed "virus/malware", in order to upload to that site you suggested?

To all you "Experts", it may be OK if I just ignore the "false positive" of Panda & just spread out the points to you all & close this query.

What do u think?
Thanks,
Jim

by: optomaPosted on 2009-10-09 at 09:33:23ID: 25536516

Definately looking like a false positive as Warturtle said.
You could contact Panda support and see if they have an answer!?

by: jamesg1940Posted on 2009-10-09 at 09:47:08ID: 25536611

Optoma & to the oher Experts:
Thank you all  & I will keep trying to contact Panda Support.
I have not received any reply to my queries re. this issue.

I'll award points, as Panda may take a very long time to respond.
But I will post such a response for all of your "knowledge base"
suggestions.
We will consider this issue a "false positive".

by: jamesg1940Posted on 2009-10-09 at 09:49:08ID: 31638998

I'll report the response from Panda Support.
Thanks all.
