Question

Why is netpass.exe showing in the results for a virus scan?

Asked by: MVPSusi

I've got a client running Antivirus software - The Shield Deluxe 2009.  The scan has found infections that can't be cleaned - the file name for 2 of the infections is netpass.exe and 1 is named WirelessKeyView.exe.  The virus name is Gen:Application.Heur.cmKfbubimRcO.  I can't seem to find anything on these names.  There is mention that they could be false positives, but I want to be sure.  Any advice is appreciated.

Submit the files to jotti: http://virusscan.jotti.org/en

This will tell you whether the file is infected or not.  Some antivirus programs automatically flag files as suspicious if they are packed with a certain file compression.

Scan the system with MalwareBytes and Combofix and show us the logfiles.

1.  Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop, check for the tool's Updates before running a scan.
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

2.  Please download ComboFix by sUBs:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log and attach it in your next reply by pasting it in the "Code Snippet" or "Attach File" window.
Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

If needed, here's the Combofix tutorial which includes the installation of the Recovery Console:

I had already found the referenced links and was looking for more of an answer to whether the files were known issues.  I do agree that there is another anti-virus solution needed for this client of mine which I will recommend.
