i am trying to rid my pc of a nasty virus or worm. it disabled my network and autoplay so i can not even use a flash drive. the pc has malware on it, but i can't execute it, even in safemode.
Any suggestions?

Download and run the follow apps in the listed order and remove anything they find.

If you will provide you Windows version I will instruct how to restore the autoplay function after the system has been cleaned.
-If issues still exist after above experts suggestions try scanning that system with this live cd:
Kaspersky live cd http://devbuilds.kaspersky
--It is in iso/image format so you will have to burn it to a cd.
--Once the cd is created, boot the infected machine to that cd and scan your system
NB-Update the virus database in live cd before scanning.

Still not enough info. You will have to be more descriptive as to what other things are occurring, specific words you are seeing not just 'it dont work'. If you can see your CD-ROM in explorer, then burn a CD ROM containing ComboFix on another computer. Get combofix info and download below:

Use combofix to see if it rids your computer of the malware. Directions at link above.
Download the applications onto the computer with which you are communicating with us.
save to disk or flash drive
if you can not see the disk or flash drive on the computer
shut down computer
remove hard drive
attach hard drive to another computer either internally or through external adapter
scan the drive on the other computer with Malware Bytes and Avast or what ever anti virus is install on the computer
this will not fully fix you but may return enough functionality to beable to perform the scans on the originall computer.

Why dont you just browse by right clicking the drive and clicking on explore just remember NOT to plug that device into another computer without formatting so the virus does not spread
