Microsoft has a good free one now:

AVG is very good .... but the free version lacks a lot of protection...... a lot better if you combine it with www.threatfire.com.
When you download the drivers, make sure you put them in a flash drive, external hard drive or burn them to a cd so you can have access to them after you finish the installation of the OS to your new hard drive.
Also, when you download them, make sure to label them correctly because most of the time, the name of the file you download, doesn't help you recognize what the drivers are for when you need them.
I personally, like to create folders with the name of what it is and download the file into that folder. This way..... I can recognize easily what I want to install. For example, create a folder and call it "Video Drivers" and another called "Network Drivers" and so on.... just to make your life easier later.
By the way... one last comment..... if you possibly can, would you add 2 or more relevant zones to your question? Like Laptops and Windows XP or Windows Vista (depending on which one you are asking about) and Microsoft Operating Systems....... this will help other askers when looking up information in the future, to find it easier..... Thanks...
Yes .... Threatfire, as AVG, has a free edition. the "file" for your internet card is the one labeled for the "Network" or "Wireless" or "LAN" ..... But the fastest and easiest way is for you to click next to "Refine Results" on the pull down menu that displays "all subtopics" ....the Audio will be the first one on this pull down menu (see attached screenshot - I highlighted the section for you)
It's a learning process.... NO.... you are not an idiot....this happens to all of us. The fact that you are thinking about "...one cancelling another..." proves that you are at a place where we have all been.
The problem is that manufacturers put a lot of drivers for a given computer model because this same model is sometimes sold with different brands of components. So unless you know exactly what components you have in your laptop.....it's a trial and error process.....
For the moment......let's assume that if it works (for example: the audio) .... move on to the next component ........ Now again.... I'm not sure of what Operating System we are talking about because the question is posted in the Anti-Virus zone.
Ok.... don't know how to change zone.
It's XP PRo.... I've installed sp 2/3. I spent 3 hrs downloading virtually every driver off lenovo and installed all of them, figuring I'd get the right one by trial and error. From what I can gather, however, it doesn't work that way. So I'm thinking that perhaps the best thing is to uninstall ALL drivers. If all the ones from teh LEnovo site are in one folder, that would seem fine. If not, I'll disinstall xp drivers along with the others.... might as well just rebuild the entire HD again, huh? Let me know what you think.
Just to be clear, Audio and internet do not work.
Yep... that is the main one.... you can't download or connect to the internet if you don't have this one. Lets tackle on thing at the time.
To change the zones you need to go to look at the upper right hand corner of the page where your question is listed, click on "open questions" and edit the question. I looked up the EE help but it just recommends this:

No need to rebuild, it won't make a difference.
Go here and enter the type of your laptop
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/
Select your Type and then model. This will be on the sticker on the bottom of your laptop.
Then select your OS.
Click on Continue, this will list all drivers that are specific to your model.
Download the Audio and Network drivers.
Or, let me know the Type and model and I will look them up for you.
This is the link to download the network driver:
http://www-307.ibm.
This is the link for your Audio driver:
http://www-307.ibm.
This link will allow you to find the rest of the drivers with less difficulty....it's friendlier:
http://www-307.
PS. Make sure you fix the zones.
