What model is your R51 ..... there are several: 2883, 2887, 2888, 2889, 2894, 2895 and more.... just to mention a few.
You might be able to use the Factory Recovery option if it was installed and if it is working.... have you tried this? It should show up when you press F11.

If you do not have the Factory Recovery option available, in response to your question regarding the order to install the drivers...... some models require and installation order. On your particular notebook, ThinkPad R51 ...(I don't know what model you have) ... it is not mentioned (or I can't find it) but in general, this is mostly the accepted order for most manufacturers (this may vary from model to model):
Chipset.
Video Adapter.
Network Interface Card (NIC).
Audio Adapter.
Modem.
Wireless Network Card.
Touchpad, Pointer, Trackstick, Mice, and Bluetooth® Module.
Wireless Mobile Broadband Cards.
PCMCIA/Smartcard controller.
Again.... this may vary depending on what devices are actually on your computer. The above is just a very basic guide.
The correct order used to be a big performance problem when the Pentium chip originally came out. Now, with Windows XP (and especially with IBM computers), when you do a clean install, XP installs most of the "Order Critical" if any drivers before you get a chance to sign on.
On most installations, the frequently missing drivers are the Network Adapters (both ethernet and wireless), the Video Adapter drivers, the Sound Drivers and the Modem drivers. This is just a very general guide.
In this case you would usually want to install the Network drivers first to be able to connect to the internet and download the remaining drivers.
As for your question of where do you check if the Network driver is enabled in the bios, I don't know... I would need to have one in front of me to actually see the screens. It will vary depending on the BIOS version but you should be able to browse through all the options and find it without problems.... just browse slow and steady and don't change anything that you don't know what it's for.
Ralph, I have attached the service manual for your model.... they offer a different procedure for entering the BIOS on page 31........ if F10 did not work (they did have it documented as the key on their site) there is no harm if you try F12, whatever allows you to get into it.
Read carefully the instructions on page 31 of the attached document.
Update....
I Typed on "CONFIG"
Network was at top. I hit "enter"
There were three things: "Wake On Lan"; "Flash Over Lan" and Internal NEtwork Option ROM"
All are ENABLED!
The Serial Port was disabled, for what that's worth.
I have Everest software. I hit the "NETWORK" icon. Then I hit the PCI/PnP Network Icon. I then get a window with two devices: Atheros AR5001x+ Wireless Network Adapter; Intel PRO/1000 MT Mobile Connection (IBM)

There is only one option....it was either F12 or F11.....there is no 2 options.
You might want to download the Acrobat PDF Reader from www.acrobat.com. It is free and takes less than 5min to install.
Unfortunately.... I can't see any screenshots of your BIOS or I would walk you thru the options..... I've been looking in google but did not find any.
Basically.... you will see some instructions at the bottom and kind of try to figure out what they mean and if you have a doubt ... ask. I don't imagine that you will need at this time to change anything and I doubt that your wireless network card is disabled. In case it is disabled (if that is the case) you will be able to enable later...
Normally.... laptops have 2 network cards, one is wired (ethernet) and the other is for wireless use.
When you are installing the drivers you will see in the device manager all items that need a driver will have a yellow exclamation mark.
So to backtrack a little... go to your device manager and see if you have anything with a yellow exclamation mark and lets leave the BIOS alone for the time being.
Try the link I posted above.... it should recover your system with the minimum effort on your part... read this.... follow step by step... The only problem I see.... apparently it came with windows ME and not XP .... well .... according to the link:

Ok ... got the info..... Let me be clear...if your system came with Windows ME, then resetting the OS back to Windows ME is NOT a good idea. This was a terrible OS.

What you see in the "add/remove programs" is the program to manage the device.
To install the driver is one thing.....(this part you need to keep clear, it's fundamental) to install the programs that will manage the device for which you previously installed the driver is another thing.
I will use another device for my example to avoid confusing you: lets say today you buy a small internet camera. This will be our device for this example. When you plug it into your computer, the computer normally doesn't know what it is or what it is for.
The computer needs to talk to it (send instructions and recieve answers and requests from the camera) so it asks you "...I found a new device plugged in, I will try to detect what it is and install it so we can use it...". In some cases the computer is able to detect what it is by using the hardware id info that comes with the camera. In other cases it doesn't know what it is and asks you if you have the driver. At other times....it thinks it knows what it is and installs it as something else. The point is ..... many things can happen.
Even then, when installed properly, it still might need a "Program" to configure and manage it and allow you to, for example, increase the brightness, adjust the contrast, take pictures, etc....
So, I'm just trying to make sure you understand that the driver and the program for a given device are 2 different things and each one needs to be right or the whole thing will fail.
Going back to your Ethernet, you had before 2 devices identified as "Ethernet Controller" so the fact that you this list has changed and now you only have 1 device saying "Ethernet Controller", under NORMAL circumstances would mean that the driver was installed correctly and you would probably see it now under "Network Adapters". If it installed correctly you should see a Network Adapters Icon in your device manager and if it has a little plus (+) sign next to it.....click on the plus sign and it should show you that the Intel Network Adapter is there.
Now notice I used large caps to say NORMAL. I did so because now you mention a new entry with the yellow exclamation mark did you did not mention before: "unkown device". What this means is that either you plugged in something else or that the ethernet controller was not properly installed and is now unkown to the computer.
Every device that is detected by your computer for which it does not have a driver or has a problem with will show up with a yellow exclamation mark....
Please read carefully the above and make sure you understand what I am trying to explain. I know that sometimes I mention something and I take for granted that people are understanding something which I might not have been very clear in explaining.
Well, there's good news and maybe bad.
I used to have 2 "Ethernet Controller" question marks. Now there's only one.
I HAVE a Network Adapters icon. When I expand it, it's the Intel PRO/1000 MT Mobile Connection
The unknown device's location is "on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Cont... (and it cut's off).
It says it's working properly! It's a ThinkPad PM Device. I just reinstalled the driver and the question mark is now gone!
So now we're down to 4 question marks:
Ethernet Controller
PCI MOdem
USB Controller
Video COntroller
I think I'm just not understanding the installation directions for some of these drivers. It's kind of involved. You have to go > Run c:\win\drivers..... etc. for some of these.
The iron of all of this is that I had 15-20 units of Comp Sci at Stanford in teh 80's. But it was mostly programming. So I basically understand the concept...it's just the specifics that get me :)

You managed to install the Wireless Network Card...... If you have wireless internet at your location you should be able to access it (assuming it's password protected and you have the password)...
According to the link I posted above for you...it's the Intel PRO 10/100/1000 LAN adapter. Go ahead and install it..... Here.... this is the direct link:

After you finish installing it..... delete it from your desktop. Go to the device manager and you should now see one less item with a yellow exclamation mark and another entry in your Network Adapters.
From the above.... just because Everest says you have the Atheros doesn't mean that you actually have it ...... this is just what Everest thinks you have..... keep things simple..... if you bought the laptop from Lenovo (IBM) and this is what IBM is saying you should have.... do as they say....(unless of course, if you or someone else changed it... then it's another story)....

Ran it. Came back and saiod "The wizard could not find a better match."

As for the ATI Radeon 9000 Video..... according to IBM .... your machine is not supported for this video card " ....Machine Type 2883, 2887, 2888, 2889, 2894 and 2895 of ThinkPad R51 family are not supported...." so it seems that Everest got it wrong again.
You probably have the Intel Video Card on your model....

Make sure you do verify the note on the download page "....For ThinkPad R51 systems, update the BIOS to version 1.07 or higher......"
What this means is that if your BIOS version is 1.07 or higher.... you have nothing to worry about....
This is why I said.... leave the video card for last.
The reason is because the instructions are bad. If you read carefully the note in:

Note: Build 94590 supports models with Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection adapter (10/100 Ethernet) only.
So why would you highlight the Intel Pro/100 MT Mobile Adapter.... you need to follow the instructions but highlighting the ethernet controller....
Notice that right under the previous note they have another note:
Build 135400 supports models with Intel PRO/1000 MT Mobile Connection adapter (10/100/1000 Ethernet) only.
It happens a lot that the manufacturers get mixed up.....
To keep it simple, these are the "corrected" instructions:

I highlighted point number 8 in the instructions above. The Ethernet Controller is the one that you need to install. And in response to your question.... Yes... the manufacturer is unknown to Windows .... this is why it has an exclamation mark.... if Windows would have been able to detect it (and if it has a copy of the driver) ...you wouldn't have to install it yourself....
Go to sleep.... take a break and install it tomorrow...
