Question

R51 IBM Thinkpad Having trouble with Internet drivers

Asked by: ralphwalkerdj

Ok....
1) How do I go to BIOS?  Is it f11?  F4?
2) Once I'm in BIOS, how do I see if the Network Adapt has been disabled?
3) I have the drivers you recommended for audio/internet.  But don't I have to UNINSTALL others first?

To go into your BIOS you need to press F10 while on the Logo screen while booting.

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-22 at 09:12:59ID: 25635867

What model is your R51 ..... there are several: 2883, 2887, 2888, 2889, 2894, 2895 and more.... just to mention a few.

You might be able to use the Factory Recovery option if it was installed and if it is working.... have you tried this? It should show up when you press F11.

These are the instructions on how to do it..... (remember that if you have any data: documents, pictures, etc.... these will be wiped out once you do this.... so back it up if they are important): http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4UFUYK

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-22 at 09:24:58ID: 25636008

If you do not have the Factory Recovery option available, in response to your question regarding the order to install the drivers...... some models require and installation order. On your particular notebook, ThinkPad R51 ...(I don't know what model you have) ... it is not mentioned (or I can't find it) but in general, this is mostly the accepted order for most manufacturers (this may vary from model to model):

Chipset.
Video Adapter.
Network Interface Card (NIC).
Audio Adapter.
Modem.
Wireless Network Card.
Touchpad, Pointer, Trackstick, Mice, and Bluetooth® Module.
Wireless Mobile Broadband Cards.
PCMCIA/Smartcard controller.

Again.... this may vary depending on what devices are actually on your computer. The above is just a very basic guide.

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-22 at 09:30:03ID: 25636059

The correct order used to be a big performance problem when the Pentium chip originally came out. Now, with Windows XP (and especially with IBM computers), when you do a clean install, XP installs most of the "Order Critical" if any drivers before you get a chance to sign on.

On most installations, the frequently missing drivers are the Network Adapters (both ethernet and wireless), the Video Adapter drivers, the Sound Drivers and the Modem drivers. This is just a very general guide.

In this case you would usually want to install the Network drivers first to be able to connect to the internet and download the remaining drivers.

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-22 at 09:33:00ID: 25636084

As for your question of where do you check if the Network driver is enabled in the bios, I don't know... I would need to have one in front of me to actually see the screens. It will vary depending on the BIOS version but you should be able to browse through all the options and find it without problems.... just browse slow and steady and don't change anything that you don't know what it's for.

Hey BitsBytesand.....

Thank you SO, SO, SO, much for your help so far.  I cannot tell you how good this feels.  Bless you.

Ok...  IT's a 2888

And, 1057, you've been FANTASTIC, too!   I feel ike I'm getting old world service here.

by: ralphwalkerdjPosted on 2009-10-22 at 11:04:30ID: 25637201

Are you sure it's f10 for the BIOS?

by: 1057Posted on 2009-10-22 at 11:10:04ID: 25637257

I had an R52 in my hands earlier. F10 didn't work for me. I went by F12 and  then choose enter setup. There I could find the option Network and there you can see both wired and wireless connection and if or not they are enabled.

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-22 at 11:25:02ID: 25637400

Ralph, I have attached the service manual for your model.... they offer a different procedure for entering the BIOS on page 31........ if F10 did not work (they did have it documented as the key on their site)  there is no harm if you try F12, whatever allows you to get into it.

Read carefully the instructions on page 31 of the attached document.

by: ralphwalkerdjPosted on 2009-10-22 at 15:05:18ID: 25639538

Ok....  So much to say...

1) I DID get into BIOS. (it's f12)  .... But I'm  unclear........  CONFIG   DATE/TIME   SECURITY    STARTUP   RESTART  are my options.  I didn't see anything about Network.
2)  I'm sorry, bits, but I don't have PDF reader on this computer
3) I'm open to that F11 option perhaps.

by: ralphwalkerdjPosted on 2009-10-22 at 15:15:03ID: 25639600

Update....

I Typed on "CONFIG"
Network was at top.   I hit "enter"

There were three things:  "Wake On Lan";  "Flash Over Lan"  and Internal NEtwork Option ROM"

All are ENABLED!

The Serial Port was disabled, for what that's worth.

I have Everest software.   I hit the "NETWORK" icon.   Then I hit the PCI/PnP Network Icon.    I then get a window with two devices: Atheros AR5001x+ Wireless Network Adapter; Intel PRO/1000 MT Mobile Connection (IBM)

Hope this helps  :)

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-22 at 15:17:51ID: 25639625

There is only one option....it was either F12 or F11.....there is no 2 options.

You might want to download the Acrobat PDF Reader from www.acrobat.com. It is free and takes less than 5min to install.

Unfortunately.... I can't see any screenshots of your BIOS or I would walk you thru the options..... I've been looking in google but did not find any.

Basically.... you will see some instructions at the bottom and kind of try to figure out what they mean and if you have a doubt ... ask. I don't imagine that you will need at this time to change anything and I doubt that your wireless network card is disabled. In case it is disabled (if that is the case) you will be able to enable later...

Normally.... laptops have 2 network cards, one is wired (ethernet) and the other is for wireless use.

When you are installing the drivers you will see in the device manager all items that need a driver will have a yellow exclamation mark.

So to backtrack a little... go to your device manager and see if you have anything with a yellow exclamation mark and lets leave the BIOS alone for the time being.

by: ralphwalkerdjPosted on 2009-10-22 at 15:18:33ID: 25639630

One last thing....  That factory reset option looks attractive, and I have almost no data (since this is a brand new install).  Still, it took several hours....

Does this reset option reformat the HD?   Or does it keep WIndows XP PRo and SP2/3 and toggle back to the original settings?

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-22 at 15:19:08ID: 25639636

Ralph.... the best advice for the moment... step out...don't change anything yet. Make sure you do not save any change.... you will get in trouble if unsure.

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-22 at 15:20:20ID: 25639645

You are talking about the factory reset of your operating system right? not the bios?

by: ralphwalkerdjPosted on 2009-10-22 at 15:21:38ID: 25639661

Ok.... Thanks again for a fast response!

In Device Mrg..... here are the yellow things:
Ethernet Controller
Ethernet Controller
Multimedia Audio Controller
PCI Modem
USB Controller
Video COntroller (VGA compat.)

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-22 at 15:23:19ID: 25639673

Try the link I posted above.... it should recover your system with the minimum effort on your part... read this.... follow step by step... The only problem I see.... apparently it came with windows ME and not XP .... well .... according to the link:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4UFUYK

If I'm mistaken and it came with XP.... go for it ......select the full recovery.

by: ralphwalkerdjPosted on 2009-10-22 at 15:23:59ID: 25639679

I won't do anything impulsive as far as F11.   And, yes, I think I'm talking about resetting the OS, not the BIOS.

Unfortunately, I have a server which does not allow me to download Acrobat reader at this time.

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-22 at 15:24:20ID: 25639684

Hold on.... stay right there....give me a minute.

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-22 at 15:29:06ID: 25639718

Ok ... got the info..... Let me be clear...if your system came with Windows ME, then resetting the OS back to Windows ME is NOT a good idea. This was a terrible OS.

You've already installed XP and you are just missing the drivers for:

Ethernet Controller
Ethernet Controller
Multimedia Audio Controller
PCI Modem
USB Controller
Video COntroller (VGA compat.)

Go to this website and download the drivers and install them one at the time. Just follow the instructions on the screen:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-55029.html

by: ralphwalkerdjPosted on 2009-10-22 at 15:30:35ID: 25639731

Just to clarify... Will I have to reinstall XP, SP2/3 and all the other applications  (e.g. Office)?

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-22 at 15:32:28ID: 25639746

Just put the file for each driver on your desktop .... run it.... and you you should see the items in yellow start disappearing one at the time.

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-22 at 15:33:43ID: 25639752

You've already installed XP.... the next step is to install the drivers. Once the yellow exclamation marks disappear from the device manager you should be able to proceed to install Office.... so NO...you do not need to install XP again.

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-22 at 15:35:08ID: 25639766

I do not know if the version of XP that you just installed is SP1 or SP3 or SP3. It doesn't matter at this point... if you don't have it.... it will download automatically when you finish installing the drivers.

by: ralphwalkerdjPosted on 2009-10-22 at 15:36:16ID: 25639776

I'll do this.... But the problem is that I ALREADY installed these drivers (I think).   I'll let you know what happens in a moment.

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-22 at 15:37:47ID: 25639786

If you had them installed properly ... they would not be in yellow. Just follow the instructions above and you will be fine..... I need to go for a while or my wife will show me the meaning of hara-kiri ....... lol. I will touch base later or tomorrow morning.

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-22 at 15:39:10ID: 25639793

So just to answer properly your last question.... NO... you have not installed them. You may have tried but they are not installed.

by: ralphwalkerdjPosted on 2009-10-22 at 15:40:03ID: 25639800

I'm going to uninstall all the drivers I can in teh ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS tab in Control Pnl.   Then I'll start re-installing.

Thanks again for your amazing help.

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-22 at 15:41:24ID: 25639808

By the way..... to answer the question number 2 at the top of this thread... no need to go into the BIOS anymore.... the fact that you are seeing 2 ethernet controlllers tells us that both are enabled and just missing the driver. So no need to go into the bios anymore.

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-22 at 15:42:13ID: 25639818

Don't install from the ADD / REMOVE programs. Follow the instructions on the web link I just posted above.

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-22 at 15:43:56ID: 25639839

Actually ... don't remove anything yet from the add/remove either.... just install the DRIVERS .... you will not or very rarely see a driver in the ADD/REMOVE programs ... it is for PROGRAMS..... not drivers.

by: ralphwalkerdjPosted on 2009-10-22 at 16:27:35ID: 25640072

ok.... Making progress.   Device Mgr. now has Network Adapters!!!!!!!!  ANd I have audio working.

There are 5 yellow quest. marks left:

Ethernet Controller
PCI Modem
USB Controller
Unknown Dev.
Video Controller

Still can't get internet.  I'm installing 7ywc54ww.exe.  Went thru full install, but no internet.  I looked under Add/Remove PRograms and the Thinkpad 11a/b/g/n WIreless LAN Mini-PCI Express Adapter is there.

So is Intel PRO Network Connections 11.2.0.69

by: ralphwalkerdjPosted on 2009-10-22 at 17:13:32ID: 25640287

Should I be worried about the 5 yellow quest. marks?  I'm trying to find drivers, but this is difficult!

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-22 at 17:38:01ID: 25640418

Ralph..... regarding:

" ...Went thru full install, but no internet.  I looked under Add/Remove PRograms and the Thinkpad 11a/b/g/n WIreless LAN Mini-PCI Express Adapter is there.
So is Intel PRO Network Connections 11.2.0.69....."

What you see in the "add/remove programs" is the program to manage the device.

To install the driver is one thing.....(this part you need to keep clear, it's fundamental) to install the programs that will manage the device for which you previously installed the driver is another thing.

I will use another device for my example to avoid confusing you: lets say today you buy a small internet camera. This will be our device for this example. When you plug it into your computer, the computer normally doesn't know what it is or what it is for.

The computer needs to talk to it (send instructions and recieve answers and requests from the camera) so it asks you "...I found a new device plugged in, I will try to detect what it is and install it so we can use it...". In some cases the computer is able to detect what it is by using the hardware id info that comes with the camera. In other cases it doesn't know what it is and asks you if you have the driver. At other times....it thinks it knows what it is and installs it as something else. The point is ..... many things can happen.

Even then, when installed properly, it still might need a "Program" to configure and manage it and allow you to, for example, increase the brightness, adjust the contrast, take pictures, etc....

So, I'm just trying to make sure you understand that the driver and the program for a given device are 2 different things and each one needs to be right or the whole thing will fail.

Going back to your Ethernet, you had before 2 devices identified as "Ethernet Controller" so the fact that you this list has changed and now you only have 1 device saying "Ethernet Controller", under NORMAL circumstances would mean that the driver was installed correctly and you would probably see it now under "Network Adapters". If it installed correctly you should see a Network Adapters Icon in your device manager and if it has a little plus (+) sign next to it.....click on the plus sign and it should show you that the Intel Network Adapter is there.

Now notice I used large caps to say NORMAL. I did so because now you mention a new entry with the yellow exclamation mark did you did not mention before: "unkown device". What this means is that either you plugged in something else or that the ethernet controller was not properly installed and is now unkown to the computer.

Every device that is detected by your computer for which it does not have a driver or has a problem with  will show up with a yellow exclamation mark....

Please read carefully the above and make sure you understand what I am trying to explain. I know that sometimes I mention something and I take for granted that people are understanding something which I might not have been very clear in explaining.

by: ralphwalkerdjPosted on 2009-10-22 at 18:01:36ID: 25640587

Well, there's good news and maybe bad.

I used to have 2 "Ethernet Controller" question marks.  Now there's only one.
I HAVE a Network Adapters icon.  When I expand it, it's the Intel PRO/1000 MT Mobile Connection

The unknown device's location is "on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Cont... (and it cut's off).
It says it's working properly!    It's a ThinkPad PM Device.  I just reinstalled the driver and the question mark is now gone!

So now we're down to 4 question marks:
Ethernet Controller
PCI MOdem
USB Controller
Video COntroller

I think I'm just not understanding the installation directions for some of these drivers.  It's kind of involved.  You have to go  > Run c:\win\drivers..... etc.    for some of these.

The iron of all of this is that I had 15-20 units of Comp Sci at Stanford in teh 80's.  But it was mostly programming.  So I basically understand the concept...it's just the specifics that get me  :)

by: ralphwalkerdjPosted on 2009-10-22 at 18:05:42ID: 25640602

P.s.
I think what I need is the driver for that Atheros AR5001X+ WIreless Network Adaptor

What about the ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 Video Adapter?

These are both showing up in Everest!

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-22 at 18:06:26ID: 25640606

Hey ..... what are you talking about...? You are doing great!!!! The other 4 are easy.... trust me on this....one step at the time.

You managed to install the Wireless Network Card...... If you have wireless internet at your location you should be able to access it (assuming it's password protected and you have the password)...

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-22 at 18:08:22ID: 25640615

You can deal with that later. Forget about Everest at this time. Just install the other Ethernet Controller and leave the video for last.

by: ralphwalkerdjPosted on 2009-10-22 at 18:12:16ID: 25640632

I'm trying to find the Atheros driver on the internet, but no luck.

Buy check this out.  I still have the old HD that would, presumably, contain the driver!  I could just transer it over if I could figure out it's name....  OR can you do that?  Do you need some extraction thingy?

I'll go check.

by: ralphwalkerdjPosted on 2009-10-22 at 18:13:24ID: 25640639

Thanks!  But how do I deal with the remaining Ethernet Controller?

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-22 at 18:15:49ID: 25640649

According to the link I posted above for you...it's the Intel PRO 10/100/1000 LAN adapter. Go ahead and install it..... Here.... this is the direct link:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-62922

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-22 at 18:17:45ID: 25640663

From the above, download this file: 7ira09ww.exe

Place it on your desktop and run it. That's it.

After you finish installing it..... delete it from your desktop. Go to the device manager and you should now see one less item with a yellow exclamation mark and another entry in your Network Adapters.

From the above.... just because Everest says you have the Atheros doesn't mean that you actually have it ...... this is just what Everest thinks you have..... keep things simple..... if you bought the laptop from Lenovo (IBM) and this is what IBM is saying you should have.... do as they say....(unless of course, if you or someone else changed it... then it's another story)....

Come on Ralph.... you've already killed the tiger..... don't fear the stripes now... you are on the right track.

As for the ATI Radeon 9000 Video..... according to IBM .... your machine is not supported for this video card " ....Machine Type 2883, 2887, 2888, 2889, 2894 and 2895 of ThinkPad R51 family are not supported...." so it seems that Everest got it wrong again.

You probably have the Intel Video Card on your model....

Here is the direct link: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-59866

Read the comments if you need to, download the file 1ud164ww.exe and copy it to your desktop and run it from there.....same story..... delete it from your desktop after you finish.

Make sure you do verify the note on the download page "....For ThinkPad R51 systems, update the BIOS to version 1.07 or higher......"

What this means is that if your BIOS version is 1.07 or higher.... you have nothing to worry about....

This is why I said.... leave the video card for last.

I ran teh 7ira09ww again...  Files were already there. I overwrote them.  Am restarting computer.

Thanks so much for your encouragement!

I still have all the drivers in a folder on my computer.  I put them on the desktop from a cd I burned off of this computer.  Could that be the problem?

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-22 at 18:36:31ID: 25640743

The reason is because the instructions are bad. If you read carefully the note in:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-55029.html

it says right under the Intel Pro 10/100/1000 Lan Adapter:

Note: Build 94590 supports models with Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection adapter (10/100 Ethernet) only.

So why would you highlight the Intel Pro/100 MT Mobile Adapter.... you need to follow the instructions but highlighting the ethernet controller....

Notice that right under the previous note they have another note:

Build 135400 supports models with Intel PRO/1000 MT Mobile Connection adapter (10/100/1000 Ethernet) only.

It happens a lot that the manufacturers get mixed up.....

Hmmmmm..... You've got me confused.   Should I go in the Pro100 instead of the pro1000?

I tried the 18 steps above....again... except I put in pro 100 instead of pro1000.   I'm wondering if there's some executable file in c:\driver\win.....?

by: ralphwalkerdjPosted on 2009-10-22 at 18:55:42ID: 25640822

Ugh.... I followed the instructions,.....   Said wizard cannot find necessary software.  (Actually, thi smay be a good sign.)
FYI, for the driver properties (we're talking about the yellow ?), the manufact. is unknown.

Under details, it says "PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_1014&Subsys_833117AB&REV_01........

Fantastic help!

Ralph... I think you are tired.... take a break.... sometimes I struggle for hours trying to fix something and I can't ... go to bed, wake up next day and solve it in 5 minutes.... really. It's has happened to me so many times and to other techs that we've all learned when it is time to stop.....

You said above:

So now we're down to 4 question marks:
Ethernet Controller
PCI MOdem
USB Controller
Video COntroller

I highlighted point number 8 in the instructions above. The Ethernet Controller is the one that you need to install. And in response to your question.... Yes... the manufacturer is unknown to Windows .... this is why it has an exclamation mark.... if Windows would have been able to detect it (and if it has a copy of the driver) ...you wouldn't have to install it yourself....

Go to sleep.... take a break and install it tomorrow...

Here is a copy of the steps so you can start clean:

1. Start Windows XP/XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 and logon with administrative
  privileges.
2. Extract this package onto your hard drive.
3. Go to your Device Manager.
4. Right-click Ethernet Controller (the one with the yellow exclamation mark) and
  click Properties.
5. Click Driver tab.
6. Click Update Driver....
7. Select No, not this time and click Next.
8. Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced).
9. Click Next in Hardware Upgrade Wizard dialog box.
10. Select Search for the best driver in these locations. and Include this
  location in the search: only.
11. Specify the path to the following sub-directory with the full path name
where you extracted the package in step 2 in Include this location in the
  search:.
    \PRO1000\Win32
12. Click Next. The driver installation starts.
13. Click Finish  when the installation completes.
14. Click Close.

Notice that there are now 14 steps.... I cleaned up a little ...

Don't think that because you assigned the points I am not going to be here to help you.

I understand.... your tired and this can be very frustrating..... once your ready again... I'll be here to help you.... I appreciate the points... Thank you.

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-22 at 19:25:19ID: 25640937

When you open the new question tomorrow..... make sure you select the zones: Windows XP,  Pc Laptops and Microsoft Operating Systems. This way, if I'm out of the Office or not available for any reason..... anyone else with the knowledge in these zones can help you.....

Once you post the question.... notify me by putting a note here in this thread..... so I know that I have to search for you.... even better...paste a link to the new question.

One piece of advise... when someone starts helping you.... you will see a lot of other people jump in to help..... if you start following everyone's advice.... they will drive you crazy.....and confuse you..... The ones that really know will try to keep the thread unified acknowledgeing the good advice and ignoring the bad one. Make sure you get a grip on the ones who are advising you as a team and weed out the ones who are just trying to make points....

A good team player is 1057: when he posted his advice he did not say: "F10 doesn't work do this..."

He was actually very polite and said it did not work for him: "...I had an R52 in my hands earlier. F10 didn't work for me. I went by F12 and  then choose enter setup...."

Well again thank you ... I will look for you tomorrow...
