Browse All TopicsI have an IBM Thinkpad R51. XP Pro. Thanks to all of you folks, I'm breathing A LOT easier now. I had a huge problem, which I fixed by just getting a new HD and doing a clean install from the bottom up.
But I still have this old HD that's corrupted WITH my precious files. Before transferring them, I thought I'd ask for your advice. So far, I've put AVG, Ad-Aware and Threatfire. Someone mentioned that the problem described below is a registry issue. Recommended Registry Mechanic. However, I was dissuaded by an intelligent fellow a few minutes ago here on EE.
The bottom line is that I want my HD FREE of any problems before I move over the files. After that is done, I plan on DBANing it and doing a clean install!
Here's what I posted:
I cannot access ANYTHING. I get a three-colored box: blue/white/grey.... The bottom gives me the choice of either "Send Error Report" or "Don't Send" This box appears no matter what I try to open... MS Word, a JPEG document, Internet... anything Sometimes I get "DrWatson Portmortem Debugger has encountered a problem...." Other tiems I get "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem..."

What makes malwarebytes so great? Should I download both? One of the problems I had was that this program took over my computer. It blanked out my screen, said I had all sorts of viruses, and wouldn't let me do anything! I kept asking me to buy it! But it's a farce. Anyway, will this type of thing be fixed by these?

By the way, just to make clear, I have the old (corrupted) HD attached to my brand new one via a external enclosure/uSB. I turned off AutoRun to avoid virus spread.
I'm running Ad-Aware, AVG and Threatfire. I hope Ad-Aware will scan more than just the c:\ drive.
Anyway, I'm totally open to suggestions.
