Question

How do I remove ESET smart security

Asked by: wilf_thorburn

I have a workstation running Vista ultimate on a server 2008 network.  This station has ESET smart security and has stopped interent access.  Local network access is provided, but internet access and e-mail are blocked.
I have tried to unistall the program, and it will not unistall completely.  I have restored the system to a previous state, with no success at getting on the internet.
Is there a clean install tool for this program?

Did you follow the same steps which as shown below

Click Start ’ Programs ’ ESET ’ Uninstall. After you uninstall, you will need to restart your computer.

Warning: Do not attempt to uninstall your ESET security product using the Windows Add or Remove Programs utility from the Control Panel.

After restarting, confirm that you can see hidden files and folders by clicking Start ’ Control Panel ’ Folder Options ’ View and select the Show hidden files and folders option.

Click Start ’ My Computer and then navigate to and delete the following folders:
C:\Program Files\ESET
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ESET
C:\Documents and Settings\%USER%\Application Data\ESET

Windows Vista Users must delete the following folders:
C:\Program Files\ESET
C:\Program Data\ESET

IF you still cant  find success from the above procedure try to use this removel tool

I suspect that when you finally remove SmartSecurity, you still will not have Internet access.  I hope I am wrong.

If that works, though, you should reinstall SmartSecurity and see if everything works properly, unless, of course, you are using some other Internet security package for the rest of the network.

Let us know so we can help you further if you need it.

Folks
I tried the uninstall as described by smithsukumar, but got permission denied when I tried to delete the files in program files.  I was logged in as administrator, and it did the same when logged in as user.
I can access the local network perfectly, just cannot go on line.  Splait, you indicate you may suspect I will still not get on line - should I do a format and restore now?

Thanks

I dont think that ESET is causing you problems.

It is great software.

1 Have you got any other antivirus or antispyware??

2 Have you had Norton or Kaspersky before??

3 Have you installed IE8 recently??

4 When and why your internet access has stopped??

Best

Also  tool->internet options->Connections-LAN settings - untick all options on auotmatic conf  as well as proxy server options

Restart IE.

Everything seemed to be working just fine until October 22nd.   explorer 8 has been installed for a while.  The only reason that I suspected ESET was when I ran the investigation from the cannot display page, after reseting the network card, the program suggested it may be ESET blocking the internet.  I disabled the Windows Firewall, with the same results.  The network connections indicate there is internet accessability until you try go on line.  then a red x appears in the line to the internet.
ESET is the only anti-virus program to be installed until now.  After removeing ESET, I have installed Symantec End point because that is what is running on the network.
ESET could be reinstalled if it is better once I can gain access to the internet.  I ran superantispyware.  It can be removed if it is in the way

Thanks

Have you tried accessing shared folders on the server or performed any other local network access?  In other words, have you verified you have local access, or are you just going by the indicators?

If you don't have local access, it might be your network card or the Ethernet cable connecting you to the network.

If you DO have access locally, I will have to do more research on your issue.

Hi Wilf,
Did you get Eset uninstalled through the link I provided?

Also,
Could you run autoruns (dont make any changes within autoruns)
Autoruns http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

Within Autoruns, select the file tab and select save(Ctrl+S)
Upload that file(autoruns.arn) to http://www.ee-stuff.com/Expert/Upload/upload.php

Also, if you don't have local access, you might try rebuilding winsock by downloading the tool here:

Informer9 -

He isn't having a problem with Norton, and until a few hours ago, the PC had only ever run ESET.  Once ESET was removed, Norton Endpoint was installed.  He doesn't need to remove that.

An aside - This issue is one thing I really dislike about Vista.  The network and Internet connection stuff is arcane and hard to diagnose properly.  In addition, it might for a while, then not work, especially with wireless connections.

Folks,
I can access shared folders on the local netowrk. The system is fine except that I cannot access the internet.  I thouhgt it had installed IE 8, but it is IE 7.  I set the advanced tab to defaults, and nothing is checked in the lan settings in connections.

by: samithsukumarPosted on 2009-10-25 at 20:41:38ID: 25659566

OK..  can you please try to access the internet through some other browser

(eg: mozilla, Opera, chrome)  you can download it from some other internet access machine and install that on current one

So that we can clear the IE part.

Have you tried running Norton Removal Tool??

Either you had Norton or not that is the best way to repair any internet connection problems.

Have you tried it?? Try and report please.

Norton has never been on the computer until yesterday when I installed Endpoint.  I will try another borwser later tonight, and if that does not work, I will need to restore the computer.

Thanks

by: splaitPosted on 2009-10-26 at 10:52:46ID: 25664836

wilf_thorburn -

I don't believe rebuilding will help.  Have you tried ANY of the suggestions made above?  What Informer9 and I are saying is that the utilities we recommended you try can restore access, even if it doesn't look like they can.

If you aren't going to try our recommendations and report back, we can't help you.

by: wilf_thorburnPosted on 2009-10-26 at 15:57:14ID: 25667860

Splait,
Since Norton was not on before, do you see an advantage to running the removal?   I can access all of the local drives.  When I go to network connections, I have a green line between my computer and the local network, but as soon as I try either go on line, or ping www.sony.com from a command prompt, the green line to the internet gets a red x in it, and I can neither ping, nor go on line.  there are 14 other workstations running vista business on the network and they all work fine.
I will run the various Norton removal tools and try firefox.  If rebuilding will not help, would you think this could be a hardware issue?

Thanks

Can you reach any https sites?

by: Informer9Posted on 2009-10-26 at 16:10:11ID: 25667939

Run it and report already ;)

by: splaitPosted on 2009-10-26 at 18:32:38ID: 25668552

I'm not sure where the miscommunication is, but yes, run the two utilities you've been asked to run, then report back.  One is WinsockFix and the other is the Norton Repair Tool.

As I said before, these often work for your issue, but not always.  You need to run these before we can help further.

by: wilf_thorburnPosted on 2009-10-26 at 21:29:28ID: 25669140

Folks,
I ran the winsock repair - same results - from network and sharing centre starts out with both green lines, red x appears on interenet side
I ran the norton removal tool - it could not remove endpoint, so I unistalled end point, then ran the Norton removal tool.  Same results
I installed firefox, and the same results.
Should I try the autoruns from optoma

Thanks for your continued patience and interest in this project.  I am going to quit for the night, and probably restore the system tomorrow night unless there are other things that you can think of that I can do

by: optomaPosted on 2009-10-27 at 01:10:15ID: 25670012

No harm to run it and upload its file. You don't need to make any changes within it :)

Folks,
I have uploaded the file

by: wilf_thorburnPosted on 2009-10-27 at 20:30:13ID: 25679759

Folks,
I have restored the sytem to the factory default, and I still have the same issue.  There are no updates on it.  It came with a version of Norton and I have uninstalled that.
Any thoughts at all on this.  The server is Windows 2008, the firewall appliance is a watchguard.
All of the other workstations are normal and access the internet.

by: optomaPosted on 2009-10-28 at 00:30:04ID: 25680619

Can you take that box out of that enviroment/network and try it.
If still no luck try a different network card and test.

by: wilf_thorburnPosted on 2009-10-28 at 04:14:23ID: 25681897

Folks,
I have taken the workstation to my home and at first it would not connect.  I let witndows do a repair to the connection, and it works fine. I can go on line with no problems.  I chose home and not work for network location.
I will take it back in about 14 hours to see what happens when it lives in its own netwok environment.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

by: optomaPosted on 2009-10-28 at 10:19:02ID: 25685679

Working somewhere proves that the network card is ok.
Back in the network, plug another machine in its location and see what happens
If the other machine is ok, maybe the network card is somehow being blocked via its mac address???

by: wilf_thorburnPosted on 2009-10-28 at 10:36:41ID: 25685979

Thanks,
I will try that tonight

by: splaitPosted on 2009-10-28 at 11:45:42ID: 25686785

You also might want to look at it the other way around.  Maybe the server only allows Internet access for specific MAC addresses, and the new one isn't in the list.

by: wilf_thorburnPosted on 2009-10-28 at 15:56:06ID: 25689140

The access is open, that is there are no restrictions.  The unit worked flawlesly from July until now.  It was just assigned a DHCP address, so I reserved an address for it, and it made no difference.  I will take it back tonight and see what happens.  I will keep you posted.

Next question - all have helped and put effort into this.  How do you want the points divided?

Thanks

by: splaitPosted on 2009-10-28 at 16:53:06ID: 25689428

We aren't done.  Points should be distributed based on who gave you the correct answers and who assisted with finding the actual solution.  If you feel that more than one person helped, or you want to reward us all, give the most points to whoever came closest to the answer and divide the rest evenly or graduate points by ranking our help.

It ain't up to us, it's your call.

For me, I just want to make sure you get your problem solved and you share the answer so we can all learn from it!

by: splaitPosted on 2009-10-28 at 17:11:58ID: 25689499

The problem now points to the router and server and their configurations.  However, you might want to check all cables along the connection path for this machine, just to eliminate them as suspects (or did I already say that?).

by: wilf_thorburnPosted on 2009-10-28 at 19:40:11ID: 25690241

Next update
I have disabled the onboard NIC and installed a new network card.  Exactly the same results.
The server is Windows Server 2008 and is has a 25 seat licence capacity.  Is there a way to see if this could be an issue?  I am grasping at straws .

by: wilf_thorburnPosted on 2009-10-28 at 20:52:02ID: 25690532

Folks,
It looks like I have been tripping over 20 dollar bills to pick up pennies. All of the computers with IP addresses reserved and at the low end of the scale [5 thorugh 22] worked.  The DHCP on the server issues addresses from 101 and upwards should someone not on the regular network attach.
The network has a cable modem for internet source.  The router is a watchguard appliance.  The server is connect to a port on the router.  There are two switches that distribute connectivity to the main part of the building.  I rebooted the server first and had no difference.  I deleted all of the leases, and again nothing.  I powered off the power bar that feeds the router and both switches, powered back on and the network seems to be working fine now.
Logic would indicate that I need to look into the watchguard appliance because as someone pointed out earlier [and I did not listen well enough] the problem may lie in those areas.]  If it was the server, then I should not have had access to the local network.

Thanks to all of you for your persistence in this.

This is the second time in two days where, had I asked the right questions in the beginning, we could have saved a lot of grief.

Experts -

We need to ask about infrastructure as early as possible on these pages, especially when we discover the original question is not the issue!

Wilf -

Congratulations on solving your problem!  I just wish we could have gotten to the root of this much sooner!   Please don't take my words as a condemnation of yourself.  It's me I'm kicking.

by: wilf_thorburnPosted on 2009-10-29 at 21:02:31ID: 31645560

Folks,
I have tried to award points that I hope will be received as being fair.  My take away from this session is that I owe you guys a deep debt of gratitude for sticking with me.  Had I asked the correct question at first instead of framing it around the message that the Vista repair connection gave.  If I had answered thoroughly and promptly, Splait would have commented sooner.

Thanks again
