Trying to access safe-mode on an old Compaq with XP

Hi,
Trying to access safe-mode on an old Compaq with XP.  Need to get to safe-mode, but only F1 for BIOS, and F10 for Recovery [doesn't work because of virus] are available.  How can you remove a virus if you can't get XP to operate [mouse freezes]?  Please advise.
