MCShield.exe CPU hog

Mcshield peroodically grabs the cpu of my Delll 8250 (running XP with 1.5gb of memory) and sucks up 90 to 100% of it for 1 to 2 minutes at a time.   I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the latest version of Mcafee and have set Mcshield's priority to as low as 4. Nothing hleps.  Mcafee tech support seems clueless. Can anyone help?
