Question

Removing XP Antivirus 2008 rogue scanner

Asked by: grg-it

I have a user that installed XP Antivirus 2008 scanner and have not had any success in removing it.  I searched the web and found several "How To" remove it, but no guide has given enough information or the guide does not work or apply with this situation.

I cannot perform a system restore because the restore fails.  I also cannot access the Task Manager.  I instead get a error that task manager is restricted by the system administrator, which I verified in the policy editor that it is not disabled.

I am attaching the hijackthis log and would appreciate any help with resolving this.

You are using an old version of HiJackThis.
Please download and run a new version from here
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download

and post results back here

Looking at your first HijackThis Log, I would suggest:
Run Hijackthis and remove the following

O20 - Winlogon Notify: ACNotify - ACNotify.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SM_IAN] C:\Program Files\AdvancedCleaner Free\ian_monitor.exe
O3 - Toolbar: emotigt - {72B445FA-2456-4718-8580-3D963E4CCB5A} - C:\WINDOWS\emotigt.dll
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://softwarereferral.com/jump.php?wmid=6010&mid=MjI6Ojg5&lid=2

O21 - SSODL: admgcx - {691C8253-CBF6-459B-B2BF-F9882FBAAACA} - C:\WINDOWS\admgcx.dll
O21 - SSODL: bdmanager - {554BD646-BF3C-4CA6-98F9-F2B756F95551} - C:\WINDOWS\bdmanager.dll
Then
Download ComboFix from here
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
To your Desktop and only your Desktop.

Before you run ComboFix Disconnect from the Internet and
Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix and remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".

Use the link below to see a list of programs that should be disabled
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html
Remember to re-enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the Internet.

Double-click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.

When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log back here.

O3 - Toolbar: emotigt - {72B445FA-2456-4718-8580-3D963E4CCB5A} - C:\WINDOWS\emotigt.dll

The above entries belong to SDBot/IRCBot infection, SDFix should take care of them.
Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.zip

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

* Restart your computer
* After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
*  Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
*  Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
*  Choose your usual account.

*  Open the extracted folder and double click "RunThis.bat" to start the script.
*  Type "Y" to begin the script.
*  It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
*  Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
*  Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
*  When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display "Finished", then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
*  Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file "Report.txt" back

Have you tried RogueRemover? it's supposed to remove "XP Antivirus 2008" and 'AdvancedCleaner"
http://www.malwarebytes.org/rogueremover.php

AdvancedCleaner Free <-- if listed in your add/remove programs list, uninstall it from there.
C:\Program Files\AdvancedCleaner Free <-- and make sure its folder is deleted.

Thank you for all advice.  Before I was given this advice I attempted a System  Restore from safe mode and successfully restored the computer before the XP AV installed.  I then deleted it's folder from All Programs.  I am going to run the updated version of HijackThis and see if any of the values mentioned abobe are still there.  Since I did the system restore, should I be concerned with any files that are not removed?

by: rpggamergirlPosted on 2008-02-20 at 06:46:37ID: 20938237

>>>Since I did the system restore, should I be concerned with any files that are not removed?<<<

the bad files showing in the hijackthis log would've been gone, the files that system Restore doesn't touch are the personal data files such as documents, music, drawings, e-mail, all files in My documents folder.

Show us another hijackthis log and we'll see if any bad files are left.

What I would be concern now is reinstalling any programs, drivers, updates that you have installed after the chosen restore point.

When posting a new HiJackThis log could you also lets us know if your Task Manager has started working.
Thanks

After running the system restore, everything is working including access to Task Manager.  The only remnant that remains is this entry in the hijackthis log:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: ACNotify - ACNotify.dll (file missing)

Should that entry be removed?

Here is the new hijackthis log.
