Question

"System Alert: Spyware Detected" along with "System Intrusion Detected" pop ups in tray

Asked by: fozylet

Hi -
I have the same symptoms and infection now in my Laptop.
1) System Alert with Yellow Exclamation Icon in the System Tray
2) The Red X icon with System Intrusion Detected in System Tray
3) A spyware alert which claims that my system is infected with Worm.Win32.NetBooster.
4) SystemDefender (which I don't remember having installed) claiming that there are dangerous spywares in my system and wants me to buy the Spware cleaner.
5) IE shows "AntiSpywareMaster" website with a list of VIRUSes and Spyware

Spybot scan shows - Smitfraud-C. entries and disableSystemRestore and disableTaskManager entries.
Here's my HiJackThis log. Can anyone help in removing this? The laptop is slow and very sluggish and am not able to do a System Restore nor kill any processes.

================================

A "System Alert: Spyware Detected" box of text pops up from a little yellow yield sign in the tray.  The yellow icon has an exclamation point on it.  The text reads:
“System Alert: Spyware Detected
System has detected 4 active spyware applications that may cause you computer to crash and restart, slow it to a crawl…”(its gone away currently so I can’t continue to type it out.  But you get the gist.)

Also a “System Intrusion Detected" box of text pops up from the tray.  The icon for it is a  red circle with a white x through it.  The icon alternates between the red circle to the Windows update logo.  The text reads:
“System Instrusion Detected! (notice typo on “Intrusion”)
The system will now download and install most efficient antimalware program to prevent data loss and you private information theft. Click here to protect you computer from the biggest malware threats.”

A browser popup reads:
“Security Configuration
Attention?  Win32.HS.m2 Spyware has just overcome default security software on Your PC.  Your personal information and pc safety is in critical danger. To clear Your PC and get rid of dangerous virus you need paid security system patch called ” AD-PROJECT". By clicking ”Continue” You will be taken to official developer’s page, where you may download the patch.”

SpywareStrike loads itself.
An HTML link to SpySherrif loads when the yellow yield sign is clicked.

Other popups include porn and casino ads.

go to avast.com and intall the free trial version...

after install it will reboot your machine....and run a virus/spyware check at bootup.

I am willing to bet avast will get rid of this...

Then I would suggest cleaning up all these virus programs...

If this is a home computer......you really on need 4 things.
1.)  Avast  -  very thin client...doesnt slow the computer...its free...and its powerful.
2.)  Microsoft Windows Defender - this is good for spyware.  get this from windows update
3.)  maybe keep spybot..but I really think these  two will do all you need.
4.)  enable windows firewall
5.)  And if your behind a router...your even in better shape.

Anything else cost too much...isnt as effective...slows down your computer.....and sometimes crashes your system just from all its overhead.

This is a proven solution...I have been virus free since setting my system this way.

If this is an office network..then you need a more server oriented solution....disregard if that is the case.

You've probably been infected by smitfraud. This certainly isn't windows defender popping up the message, but rather the malware itself.

Follow the instructions on the following link to get this removed:

A complete SpyBod S&D scan removed the threats. Thank you robbhill and rindi for your help.

Your welcome...I think even though spybot answered your questions....you should pass points to people who attempt to help you...you had already ran spybot according to your post.  And just a note...
spybot alone is not a good solution.  If this is your infrastructure its just a matter of time until you get a nasty virus.

If I may offer some thoughts here....

With evidence of Vundo/Conhook trojan, Smitfraud, and some SDBots/backdoor trojans....I doubt very much that Spybot S&D truly solved the problem here. I would advise you post a new HijackThis log along with any other logs from tools you may have run such as Smitfraudfix. Please post them as attachments.

Just my 2 cents worth on this.
Regards,
Dave

Dear Vee_Mod - Sorry for the delayed response - I was onsite at customer place and could not respond immediately.
The affected Laptop is provided from my office and I got infected while being at Customer Site. Fortunately after posting the question, when I ran the SpyBot S&D and clicked the list of issues (which included SmitFraud-C, Zlob etc..) and fixed them through SpyBot S&D. I restarted the Laptop and evrything is back to normal. TrendMicro is installed from the office and I installed Spybot as additional measure. Maybe fortunate enough that SpyBot removed the threat in my case :) .

I am thankful to everyone of you and your time
