Looking more like a hardware problem on your hard drive, disk controller, or possibly a loose disk cable.
Try running some memory and disk diagnostics. Best to download the diagnostics for your specific disk directly from the manufacturer's web site. Another option is to try the diagnostics from the Ultimate Boot CD: http://www.ultimatebootcd.

Note - Add another problem - I just tried to do a chkdsk/f and found that it never went past 3%
I could skip and boot up and the keyboard worked. I do find this extremely alarming and
since the no disk errors were detected I am surprised. I did the chkdsk/f because I could not create any shortcuts on my desktop. I could however create them by copying a shortcut
This just sucks when the computer is a new computer just 1 yr old. I do find it odd this happens just after the service contract from Dell expires.
At this point my diagnostic options are limited. Worse since the Chkdsk/f gets stuck I have no way of repairing any supposed disk damage. - Its looking more and more like a worm or hack but since I have been no unusual websites recently this now may be just bad hardware. If that is true then
why is it that MSFT event viewer shows no disk errors at all.
I will now try to fix the disk by using explorer's disk repair but I really doubt this will save me!
