Thanks for the links. I am running the removal now. I will let you know the outcome shortly. BTW, if we update the definitions for Symantec and Webroot weekly, how is it this kind of thing gets through?

Browse All TopicsOn a laptop running XP, Pro, I was able to remove the Total Security virus to an extent, but now every time I start the computer, I get a waring from Spysweeper that a new program was added to startup, JAYUWEGIFI. When delete it, it appears again the next time. I try and remove it with MSCONFIG and it tells me I need admin rights, which I have.
Also in the Application Data folder are dozens of empty folders with starnge names like "kiratero" or "semajosn". The machine already has Symantec Corp, version 10 and Spysweeper. I installed Avira, which did remove most of the virus.
What else can I do, besides backup and re-image?

First, there is not any A-V program going to detect every virus. Second, the virus is created first and then the A-V company has to develop a fix. Third, weekly may not be frequent enough, since viruses are created literally by the minute. I usually set Symantec to update every day. I have a Kaspersky Enterprise environment that lets me update it hourly.
Also, if you're using just the A-V component of Symantec, I would suggest upgrading to Symantec Enterprise Edition - it checks for more than viruses and includes a better "engine" than version 10 when detecting malicious activity.
