I don't have a specific answer, but I have a trick that I can propose

recently i've downloaded Kerio Personal Firewall, installed it, and configured it, i figured out that it contains a n ad-blocker

the good thing is that you can configure it by yourself, what i mean is taht if you have a specific website where porn banners are annoying you, you can add these banners to the kerio ad-blocker, and it will block them once for good

i'm not sure if those annoying things are BANNERS or ADS .. if they're ADS then it might work, if they're banners i'm not so sure

GL anyway

what is the difference between banners and ads?

by: BarthaxPosted on 2007-01-12 at 04:05:09ID: 18300544

In Firefox 2 you can block images for particular web sites: Tools->Options, Content tab.  If the Load images automatically option, click the Exceptions & then enter the sites where the adverts come from.

In the Opera browser you can block sites: Tools->Preferences, Advanced tab, select Content on the left-hand list, click Blocked content & add the site.

For Internet Explorer 6 & 7 I don't know if this is a feature (I've not found one).  There options to prevent the cookies from certain sites (Tools->Internet Options, Privacy tab, click Sites).  Perhaps someone else can fill you in there (as well as me).

Difference between banners and ads: banners are a sub-set of ads: they are typically across the top of the page.  Otherwise, they're ads just like the rest. :D

barthax: i tried your solution with firefox, but it didn't work.

Usually adults ads are displayed when visiting adult sites, are you saying that you get this ads/banners when visiting normal sites? If you do get this adult banners even when visiting normal sites, then the trigger is in your pc.

Then let's look at your hijackthis log.
http://danborg.org/spy/hjt/alternativ.exe
Open Hijackthis, click "Do a system scan and save a logfile" don't fix anything yet.

Then upload the log to any hosting sites,
http://www.ee-stuff.com
Click on "Expert Area" tab
type or paste the link to your Question
"Browse" your pc to the location of your Hijackthis log and click "Upload"
Copy the resulting "url" and post it back here.

OR: either these sites:
http://www.rafb.net/paste/
then at the bottom left corner click "paste"
Copy the address/url and post it here:

http://www.hijackthis.de/
and click "Analyse",
At the top of the analyses, where it says, "The following analyses has been stored temporarily" underneath that, click on "Logfile of Hijac..."
and post the resulting URL back here.

If you have trouble uploading the log, then just paste it here.

please notify me if you see anything wrong with it even if it's not related to the problem posted in this thread. thanks a lot.

p.s. i really appreciate the quick replies.
thanks again

Thanks for the log,
I don't see malicious entries in your log, but some nasties can also hide from the scan so I wouldn't say that you're pc is clean or otherwise.
You can also safely "Fix" any 04 entries to make your startup a little quicker if you like.
I can see that you visit torrent sites, these sites have adult popups/banners so that means it's not trigger by your pc, and you just need popup blocker.
But if you get these popups visiting non-torrent sites then it could be something in your pc.
Some rootkits can also trigger popups like Apropos rootkit and they don't show up in the scan.
Try running CCleaner and SuperAntispyware and we'll see from there, if the popups still appear even in non-torrent sites then we'll run more diagnostic tool.

Are you using windows firewall? I'm using the Zone Alarm, it's better than the windows firewall.
Try checking your hosts file to make sure that the trigger doesn't come from there,
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\hosts

Run these tools:
CCleaner:(to clean your temp folders)
http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds.aspx

Download and install Superantispyware, very good malware scanner.
http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfile.html?productid=SUPERANTISPYWAREFREE
Load Superantispyware and click the "check for updates" button.
Once the update is finished, close SuperAntispyware again, we'll perform the scan later in safe mode

* Start Superantispyware.
Click the "scan your computer" button.
Check "Perform Complete Scan" and then next.
Superantispyware will now scan your computer and when its finished it will list all the infections it has found.
Make sure that they all have a check next to them and press next.
Click finish and you will be taken back to the main interface.
Click "Preferences" and then click the "statistics/logs" tab. Click the dated log and press view log and a text file will appear.

thanks, rpggamergirl:
i think you named the problem there. now that i think about it, i think the banners have been appearing on ly on torrent sites.

but that still leaves my original question unanswered. is it possible to block them, or prevent them from showing somehow?

by: rpggamergirlPosted on 2007-01-23 at 17:58:49ID: 18381688

To be honest, I only have Zone Alarm to block sites' ads but it doesn't block all of them because I tried visiting torrent sites and I get some adult banners still. I didn't install a third party blocker because I don't really need it for normal sites.

What you need is a third party blocker, like AdBlock addon for Firefox, where you can set "filters", it looks easy to add filters, I don't have it but looks easy on the link, maybe try it.

AdBlock firefox addon.

by: mehul_karPosted on 2007-01-23 at 18:22:02ID: 18381771

now is this for pop ups, ads, or banners?
I'm NOT getting any popups. i have absolutely no problems with popups. i don't particularly like addons because it slows down firefox, and just makes it junky.

by: rpggamergirlPosted on 2007-01-24 at 00:06:24ID: 18383786

Yes, they are for stopping the adults popups/ads/banners,
I thought you wanted those to stop when you visit torrent sites. Oh well.
