Question

ipconfig command only results in "Windows IP Configuration" line of text

Asked by: LANovak

I don't know if the problem I'm having is related to having just installed Symantic 360, but after running a complete system scan along with fixing the reported issues (included several viruses), I now cannot access the Internet.  When I run the ipconfig command, the only result is "Windows IP Configuration."  I would like to know what to do.

1. Click on Start
2. Go to Control Panel
3. Change the View to Classic View (much easier to find the icon you need)
4. Double Click on the icon that says Administrative Tools
5. Click on where it says Services, and that is Services by itself, nothing else.
6. Find where it says DHCP Client, or just DHCP and click on it.
7. Underneath it should say Start Automatically, if it doesnt, just click on it and change it to automatically
8. Make sure that it also says Started, if not, like in my case it said Stopped, click on the button underneath that says START, close it out and run ipconfig again, there should be an ip address and they should be able to surf.

Then run ipconfig /all

I'd suspect that Symantec 360 has 'seized' control of the network card completely, including all network traffic.  A way to find out for sure, although tedious, would be to uninstall the software, reboot, check the machine for connectivity, then reinstall again.

Your network card is disabled, go to control panel -> network connections and enable it.

If it is not there, it has had its driver corrupted or uninstalled, reinstall the driver.

dhcp wrongly setup also does this, stating the network card is disabled is logical, but i dont think this would "randomly" happen. where-as dhcp is a bi*tch

if DHCP were malfunctioning you would still see your Local Area Connection in ipconfig you would just have 0.0.0.0 or an APIPA address.

Thank you to everyone who has submitted a suggestion.  I have gone through each one and here is where I am at:  1.  Services > DHCP Client was already listed as Started Automatically.  2.  ipconfig/renew did not do anything; the results were the same:  "Windows IP Configuration"  3. My Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection driver showed up as installed.  4.  Interestingly, my Local Area Connection status says I'm connected but under connection status, there is nothing listed for the Address Type, IP Address, Subnet Mask, or Default Gateway.  When I click on Repair, I get the message that "Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed:  Failed to query TCP/IP settings of the connection.  Cannot proceed."  I then went to the Properties of the Local Area Connection and unchecked Symantec Network Security Intermediate Filter Driver and guess what?  I got an IP address and connected to the Internet.  Wow!!!  Just takes a little work sometimes.  Thank you for the help that got me started poking around.

Since I pointed out that it probably was Symantec seizing the connection, I'd say that helped, but I have no objection refunding the points to the author, who spent the time finding the exact issue.   (I would personally remove Symantec and throw it away, but that's a personal preference)

I agree that Bibliophage reinforced my suspicion that Symantic was behind it, but I would also suggest that Probity was the one who led me to the Loca Area Connection area.  I didn't see an option for splitting the points three-way, but if I could, I'd say they equally belong to me and these two others.
